Northern Ballet School Manchester

Hi all, I was wondering whether anyone has experience of the school they can relate please. DD has auditioned there, and we are not sure whether it would be the right place for her.

Re: Dance and period pain

Thanks Welsh Mum, my dd can feel very faint too - although she hasn't passed out she's been fairly close once or twice. Most months are ok, but 2 or 3 times a year she gets a bad one and really suffers. It helps to know that something can be done, as she wants to be a dancer, and hopes to be in full...

Re: Dance and period pain

Thanks, we will try that, although she struggles with swallowing tablets and gags on them, which is why she usually has nurofen meltlets. She is 15. I used to get awful period pain too, and my GP put me on the pill to help, which it did to a small extent. This was years ago though!! I'd really been ...

Dance and period pain

Does anyone have any suggestions to help please. My dd doesn't usually suffer, but every so often she will have a really painful period, and feel quite ill with the pain, and gets queasy too. She takes nurofen for it, but it doesn't help all that much, and can't really clutch a hot water bottle whil...

Re: Will ballet go against dd?

My dd - a ballet girl - was advised to do more jazz, which would widen her opportunities when auditioning.

Re: Value of exams

As 2dancersmum says, the higher grade exams with RAD and ISTD (possibly other examining bodies too) are awarded UCAS points, so can be used when applying for future higher education courses in the performing arts. Quite a lot of the application forms for workshops and holiday courses ask for grades ...

Re: Do you put your child's success before everything?

Just Mums with dancing Daughters you're looking for, is it? Bit of stereotyping going on if you ask me. Will your magazine article reflect this as well? There are also such things as Dads - and Sons dance too, you know! (I would put this comment on all the threads you've started, but, to be honest, ...

Re: DS Starting Tap and Ballet Late

My dd's teacher sometimes has GCSE or A level students who would like to start ballet, and she puts them in Grade 5. Because she puts people in class based on ability and not age, they would join students in the class from about age 11 up to 14 or so.

Re: Funding for Courses

Hi there - it will depend on the qualification at the end of the course. Is it a BTEC/NVQ course, or some sort of degree? Funding can be available via a student loan for degree courses. Have you looked to see if the course comes under the DaDa scheme (Dance and Drama Awards)?

Re: The 'Free people' adverts - dancer uproar!

Imagine the furore if an ad company filmed a commercial featuring a golfer, and used a model whose technique was not up to par (excuse the pun)! Free People should have known better. The model in the film did her best, but her technique was nowhere near that of a trained ballet dancer, and some of t...

Re: Drama in school

Bigger secondary schools often have a whole Performing Arts department - my dd's head of year is also head of the Performing Arts dept, which is handy as he understands the need for time off for things like auditions/performances etc. Will there be open days at the local schools you can attend? Mayb...

Re: DaDa Funding for 2013-14

Maybe it's just a good story... based on an absence of information?

No government department can announce funding more than two years hence - all government spending is agreed annually so they won't know anything yet!
