Re: Dd is giving up!

I can emphasize totally with this - my DD has been dancing since she was 3 but a couple of years ago decided she would probably do A levels and go to university for a totally unrelated subject to performing arts. It was a very difficult decision for her , especially as she had already had a glimpse ...

Re: Mental health in performing arts

You and I will have to disagree on this. Yes her parents went public - to raise awareness of their own personal tragedy and their own awareness go fund me campaign. I'm afraid I agree that you should have spent more time drafting your initial post. I appreciate that your post was well intentioned an...

Re: Mental health in performing arts

Not sure how I feel about this thread - talking about mental health and making sure how young performers are aware of help out there is obviously important but I do not feel that this has not been done very sympathetically here. The poster quotes the case 'tragic case' of an individual , names them ...

Re: Vocational training at 16

My DD went to vocational training at 16. I have to say even up to the point she went I wondered if she was ready - moving from a tiny village to a much larger city/college and away from home for the child who got dreadfully homesick on any school trip. She auditioned as we were struggling to find an...

Can I ask which Vale School of Dance? There is one in Wales also, which I know of dancers who went there- but talking some years ago as my DD is older and now dances professionally.

Re: Is this commonplace ?!

I guess it depends on the type of work you are looking for. There are plenty of jobs out there where they will ask for a specific size - but they tend to be more photo shoots, promotional work where costumes are required, childrens parties like the princess parties and one off corporate events. They...

Re: Is this commonplace ?!

I take a slightly different slant on the aspect of size for dancers. My DD applied to ballet schools and dance colleges and our experience was that it was body proportions as much as anything for dance. Long legs, shorter body - that sort of thing - a body type. We do know of dancers of a wide range...

Re: oyster card

I believe that although you apply online for this you have to go to a post office to get it completed/approved and for this you need to ID to prove both age and address and you need a letter from the school/college to say that you are still in full time education. Age and proof of residence should b...

Re: Sixth Form and future training when?

Income threshold for DADAs is currently £90k - so earn above that and you are ineligible for any award and the parental contribution varies according to income up to that cut off point.

Re: Lots of luck to all auditionees! & a place to put results

I do wonder if it being the centenary year and changing shows around has had an impact. You will know from your childs first 2 years that they do normally have separate musical theatre and dance shows at the end of the year and I have heard several complaints that the graduates this year have not be...

Re: Lots of luck to all auditionees! & a place to put results

If your graduate class of 28 and only 10 with agents to go by is correct, then it seems like quite a poor year for Hammond. That percentage is a lot lower than it was for my DDs year or the few years before hers. I'm also curious as to where you are getting your information re the types of jobs that...

Re: Lots of luck to all auditionees! & a place to put results

GillyM - I'm not sure that those figures are right for the Hammond. The diploma has always been up to 40 students but they rarely take on more than 30 in a year and remember that this 30 on the diploma is spread across 2 separate courses. They have the first year in common but the 2nd and 3rd years ...

Re: DD is looking for accommodation in Portsmouth for Panto

Is the one you found that has a dog on theatre digs booker as that has a few places listed for Portsmouth? Another place to look now your DD is an adult would be through 'The Hustle' page for dancers on facebook. Lots of performers on there who are used to finding accommodation for panto and could a...

Re: Pre-audition Courses

My DD also did the day at Laine as described already. She also did a day at the Hammond. They do free taster days in December and January each year normally where the prospective students do 5 sample classes of some elements of the dance and MT diploma courses - ie jazz, contemporary dance, vocal an...
