Just wondering if everyone who applies for the auditions gets an invite to audition or if there is an initial selection process to invite certain children to try out?

No - they do audition a lot of people but possibly 1 in 10 who apply as so many apply. I don't know this for a fact but they definitely don't invite everyone who applies.

Thanks, had an email asking DD to audition in a band slot of about ten other kids,I'm presuming this means for her to play bass. Email says child must be 9 by July so I'm also presuming that's next July as we are now in September

It will be 9 by the start of rehearsals which will be January. They obviously have forgotten to change that on the email. If she plays the bass then yes, they'll be expecting to see that, but I'd be surprised if all 10 play bass - some will be acoustic guitarists.
