Think I'm trying too hard to be lazy (monologues)

Post by Katymac »

DD has all these auditions with different criteria for the monologues & songs

So I'm busy trying to find a monologue that meets this criteria:
From a play
Post 1970
Contemporary
Close in age to DD (15)
That she has a chance of knowing (so she doesn't have to read & learn an entire new play)

I might as well give up, mightn't I? It really isnkt going to happen is it?

I know exactly what you mean - on those criteria my DD would have had a choice of 1 - Judy's monologue in Too Much Punch for Judy - the play she did in her Theatre Studies GCSE so I don't know if it therefore would be too overdone in auditions. Dancers in this household so the monologue bit was a huge leap into the unknown.

Try "Henna Night" by Amy Rosenthal.

it's only short! It would take less than an hour to read I would guess.

It's worth looking at one act plays - they don't take long to read and probably are not used all that often for auditions.

You could also check out 'School Play' by Suzy Almond and 'Like a Virgin' by Gordon Steel; both have contemporary good monologues for a teenage girl ... 'School Play' is about a girl who is disruptive in school but discovers a love of music and 'Like a Virgin' is about a teenager who is dying of cancer. You may be able to find the actual monologues on the internet ...

What about DNA by Dennis Kelly. There is quite a good monologue for Leah who is around 16.
All new to me!

I read often on this site that the audition panels are fed up with 'Like a Virgin' so I'd tend to give that one a miss.

Yes to DNA. My husband is working on this play with his students and says it's really good.

What about Rosaline from After Juliet by Sharman MacDonald?
