....although he doesn't fit the image I had in my brain reading the book, at all??? I imagined the character to be quite weather-beaten and certainly not attractive in a conventional sense (unlike Daniel )

I think DC can look weather-beaten though - He is good at being chameleon-like, and can look different in different roles.

But I agree, can't have too much of him - and I speak as someone who had THAT picture (coming out of the sea, speedos, in Casino Royale) on her 50th b'day cake

This is the guy that the Swedes had playing the main character, and much as I think our Daniel's lovely, this is definitely more what I had in mind reading the book...
