To anyone who hasn't already seen this and wants to sign; a family in Birmingham were home educating. They refused admittance to their home, from the LEA, as they are legally allowed to and the LEA woman reported them to social services on the spot. Social Services came and threatened to take their children away, so since that time, they have been on the run, somewhere in Europe. The site also features the SS most recent claims, all refuted and a video of the children, showing them happy and well. If you wish to support this family, in their quest to stay together, please sign this petition;

Social Services Abuse of Power

Re: Social Services Abuse of Power
nancyboo - do you know this family personally?
it is a great fear for social workers that they are being individually named on the internet in the way that this petition does, which could put them and their children in jeopardy - i find the language on this petition intemperate in a way that, i am afraid, does not leave me sympathetic to the family, however much i try to read this objectively - i also note that whilst 2 social workers are named IN CAPITAL LETTERS, neither the son's medication nor his consultant are named, so no third party can make an objective judgement on these
fyi, i do not myself work for social services, nor can i think of anyone i know who does atm, and tho i work as a teacher, i am happy to recommend home ed and to support those who do so

Life is complex - some of it is real, some of it is imaginary.
Re: Social Services Abuse of Power
I agree with you mathsmum, my thoughtx exactly. I don't like individually naming people on the internet either. It's an unfortunate fact that sometimes social workers, like anyone else, get it wrong. But often their inaction can lead to tragedy. So as I don't know enough about the case, i would prefer not to sign something like this. It could be they are being over-cautious, but I remeber that case earlier this year when a young girl starved to death. Her mother said she was home schooling the child after teachers expressed concerns. She refused admittance to social workers on several occasions, the gilr died. I am not suggesting at all that this is going on here, but it may explain the social workers concerns and behaviour. I would also not be that convinced by a video - in some circumstances children will deny all sorts of things if they think their family will be split up.
I think being a social worker is an incredibly hard job. Wheh they get it right we don't hear anything about them. Their mistakes however are publicsed and can be tragic. i would not do it for all the world.

Re: Social Services Abuse of Power
Yes.
I personally support it, given that the social W have threatened this family and put their children in jeopardy, therefore I feel it fair to do the same to them. There are many sites which name them personally. If such people have issues with such things, then they should do their jobs better and then it wouldn't happen. I find nothing in it offensive in the least, or indeed lacking, as I do not feel it is up to me to contact the consultant etc etc, I feel that is the job of the SS and I'm not doing it for them. Regarding the language etc, I feel that if I had been threatened with my children being taken from me, for no reason at all and had to give up my home, family, job etc to move continuously, like a gypsy across Europe, I might feel a little upset too and that may very well show in my mood and choice of words.
I have re-read my post and I can honestly see no-where where it demands that people sign this. It simply offers it up to those who may wish to do so. As such I really dont want to get into a dispute about the wrongs and rights of the situation, especially given that this is a site for young actors etc and not a political campaigning site. Each to their own. It is what it is. I said what I said, nothing more. People can read it, they believe it, or not, they sign it, or they don't. That is all.
ps/ The girl starved to death, allegedly home schooled was not infact home schooled, nor did the family follow any of the red tape associated with being home schooled, unlike this family, as such this should've sent alarm bells to the SS in the first instance, but they chose not to press the issue ie; didn't do their jobs properly.
