Would a theatrical agent cold call?

Post by orangebear4 »

Something odd happened yesterday evening in our house. The phone rang just as Andy Murray was serving on match point, and I made my husband answer it. He didn't seem to know who it was, so I said if it was some company wanting me to do their survey could he tell them to ring back another time. He hung up. When I asked him who it was he said it was a theatrical agent ringing for my 14 year old dd, and wanted to speak to her parents. Dd and I went a bit mad, phoned 1471, but the number was withheld.
Has anyone else experienced an agent cold calling them? It's driving us mad wondering who it could have been. Dd hasn't worked for ages now school work has taken over, and has never had an agent, although she auditioned for one about 3 years ago, but didn't get in. We are wondering how this person got our number in the first place. Dd is thinking of course that it could have been her one big chance, and is really upset, but being rational I think that's unlikely as the big agencies wouldn't have to cold call. we cannot think of any of our contacts who might have referred dd either.

We were once phoned randomly one evening by the guy from the casting website, dd had registered but not paid for full membership or booked a workshop audition. He was persuading us to do that....we didn't follow it up.

Don't know if you've registered?

Would be much more exciting if it was someone from Curtis-Brown though! Fingers crossed for you!

Yes, we are in the same position with the Casting Website - registered but never subscribed, but this call was from a woman.......
The worse thing is they will probably never phone back!

It was a lady who phoned me up from The Casting Web Site who phoned me up about ds he is regestered but I would pay she said a director was intrested in ds for a film he did a video audition has now got down to the 4th recall even though he has only done 1 heard from some one else on this site who's son has also got to the 4th recall got it through TCWs as well. So it might be them looks like even if you dont pay and a CD/director sees your dc they will still contact you, expect TCWS do that if they just said you can not contact them they have not paid, would not look very good for them. We have also had them phone up to as if ds wanted to do a work shop to which I said no. Do not think any of the big good agency's would cold call you they don't need to as they have 1000s of people contacting them. You could phone up The Casting Web Site and see if they called you then that will be one you can take that of your list of who contacted you.

Would the Casting Website staff call themselves a 'theatrical agent' though? The mystery goes on....... :?

If it's a genuine theatrical agent who is really interested surely they will ring back?

I would reassure dd that if it was a big theatrical agent, and they were interested enough to cold call for some reason, then they definitely wouldn't give up! They would call again. I am quite certain that they would also have left a name and number.

Edit: Snap, Sapphire!

I doubt that it is her "big break" that she's missed, though I can understand your frustration at not knowing quite who it was and what they wanted. A genuine theatrical agent would only be likely to call if they had seen her in something, and they would surely have mentioned that.

It is possible that someone would refer to themselves as a theatrical agent, even if they weren't. I think Irishdancer's suggestion is a good one: calling the Casting Website folk to find out whether it was them.

Be sure to report back, won't you!
