Post by Neesh5 »

hi everyone,

im thinking that ,during the holidays, i will build my resume up by doing more training.
i've done G.C.S.E drama and currently doing AS drama and theatre studies, but i want to build this up.

stagecoach is something near that i could take, but just wanted to know if it is worth taking
im thinking of doing their holiday workshops. plus what do they teach?

Stagecoach is a franchise, so it depends very much on the individuals involved in running your branch. Some are led by very experienced teachers with a wealth of knowledge to impart. Some are not.

I think you would find that most of the participants will be younger than you, though I could be wrong.

Everything you do will teach you something and help you to progress, but I don't think Stagecoach will build your resume. I would do the summer workshops if they look fun and you think you will learn something (probably best to contact the organisers to find out exactly what's involved, what they teach and what the ages of the participants are). It is possible that most of those involved will just be regarding it as something fun to do in the holidays (nothing wrong with that) rather than training. You may find that it is the other participants who will have the most influence on how enjoyable/useful it is.

Is it musical theatre you are most interested in? Or acting?

I think amateur productions and possibly student films would be more useful to you in terms of your CV and maybe in terms of relevant experience too. The optimum is to combine training/classes with public performance. I know it's not always easy to find anything and I certainly don't think a Stagecoach summer school would be a waste of time, it just won't matter much on a CV - mainly because it is open to everyone.

I would be interested to know what others think.

Where are you based? There are lots of theatres in London that offer professional training. I agree with pg on Stagecoach, most brunches have a big number of young children that go there to have a first approach to the art or because their parents think that it is good for building their confidence.

hi everyone :) thanks for your responses x

i'm based in Warwickshire, so not near london. and i guess i'm mainly into acting than musical theatre in relation to pg's question. but there are other classes around like theatre craft which is held by jaide's school of performing arts. but just wanted to see if stagecoach would look good on a resume.

but there are not much classes here locally where i live :/

Have you checked to see whether BSA (Birmingham School of Acting) have any courses running that you could get to?

You must be near to us, in Rugby, since you mention Jaide's.

Which holidays do you have in mind? Rugby Theatre does a production in the summer hols which suits your age group. It's also worth keeping an eye on what's going on in Birmingham and at the RSC in Stratford on Avon.

If you want something to build your CV, why not look for some film projects that you could get involved with? Act2Cam has a residential film camp happening during the summer hols or you can look on the casting websites for opportunities.

Good luck

Yes, Rugby Theatre is producing Footloose this summer for their youth project. Auditions are in May

They are also auditioning for The Importance of Being Earnest in April. If you are female and 17+ you could audition for Cecily.

Right now they are in rehearsals for Whistle Down the Wind. There are a lot of kids involved but if you aren't already part of it you're probably too late.

And you are only 50 mins out of London on the West Coast Main line so don't write off the possibility of working there, especially if you are beyond the age range where height/location restrictions apply (don't get me started on that....). Both my DDs travel regularly to London for auditions and for work. In many ways its an easier and more comfortable journey than getting to Birmingham.

Finally, can you get to Stratford? It's a trickier journey by public transport so you'd need a car and/or a willing taxi driver (usually known as 'mum' or 'dad') but they cast young people from time to time, and they also run very good courses and workshops.

Going back to your first question, my older DD didn't rate Stage Coach locally, but loves the Theatre Train group. As mentioned earlier, they are both franchises and what suits one person may not suit another. Attending either isn't likely to make a big difference to your CV.

Hope this helps
