Chaperone pay

Hi

Is there a normal rate for chaperone pay? Only at the theatre where I chaperone we never get told how much we are being paid or whether it's hourly or per session. Thanks

Hi Livy2. It can vary hugely from company to company. From £0 to just expenses (travel, parking etc.) to usually around minimum wage.

The last company that a friend of ours chaperoned for, which were a big national professional one who do Pantos, (not naming any names here), didn't pay a bean for anything, and expected every parent to be licensed and do a number of shows, even threatening to remove their child from the show when they said they couldn't chaperone due to work commitments!

Now THAT sounds familiar, and the reason why Ds hasn't done panto for the last three years - though I am sure there are better production companies out there!

I did some chaperoning at the Barbican Theatre got £55 per secession only worked 3 and 1/2 hours a day, TV work is about £75-£85 depending who you work for films about £90 to £120 hope that helps. Only with BBC if you are a parent and chaperon your own child you don't get £75 but a reduced rate think its about £50 which I feel is very unfare

Thanks for your replies. What a range of things happening out there! When DD did a BBC thing years ago, I don't remember being paid anything to chaperone, but it was mainly my husband at that point and she was only 5. Think I will ask the head chaperone but I do like being around in rehearsals just in case. We had one chaperone who was absolutely awful and terrified one kid so much he was too scared to move. The Director had a word with all of us as a warning even though a lot of us weren't there at that point.

We've had some really scary chaperones too... (some have been given names like Atilla the hun, and the the Dragon) How do these people manage to be put in charge of little ones? On the whole though most have been lovely
