School Vs Auditions

Post by ruby95 »

I have an audition for the lead in what I think is a relatively small budget feature film but it is the week before my A level exams. Should I go?

Is it just the audition you are concerned about? What are the shoot dates? If they want you, might they alter them to suit you? An audition need not take up too much time and if it's a paid job, it would be a pleasant way to earn money after exams! Don't do it if you feel it will interfere too much with your studies though. There will be other opportunities.

I would say that your exams are more important at this point but if you feel prepared, you may enjoy taking time off for an audition ... DD auditioned the day before one of her A levels - just took work with her to do on the train ... good luck if you do go for it and good luck with your exams too!

Thanks so much both of you. I need to get back to my agent asap this morning so if anyone has any other opinions to tip the balance i'd be grateful.

I know it's me again rather than someone new!

What do you think you should do? I would trust your own instincts - from other things you have posted it is clear to me that you are bright, thoughtful and pragmatic. Clearly, you are also talented, which is why people are interested in seeing you. If there is money in it then your agent will be keen for you to go but your own instincts and ambitions are the ones that matter.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks PG! I am always thrilled to receive your thoughtful advice. I have had a think, and I think on balance I need to concentrate on my studies for the next few weeks if I am going to meet my A*AA offer

Could you explain to them that it is in the middle of your exams and would love the opportunity to audition for them but at a different date? If their audition process is anything like S&A it will be long drawn out thing andthey could see you in a month, or go at recall stage - my dd has done this before, its usually only commercials where everything is done last minute.

Good luck with the studying Ruby! I feel sure there will be many more opportunities out there for you. Sounds like a very sensible and mature decision to me. :D
As francescasmum suggests, your agent can always find out whether they are interested in seeing you after exams. You never know!

I agree with francescasmum that it's worth asking your agent to see if you can be seen at a later date ... DD's agent did this when she was invited for an audition which clashed with filming for a BBC series.
