How to choose a monolgue

Post by swanny »

My daughter has just been asked to do a dramatic reading and record it for an audition. What advice have you got.? Should she just read a passage from a favourite teenagers book?

In general where is the best place to find a monologue - I know people say Google - but any particular website- or book? I have a 10 year old boy and a 13 year girl.

Thanks
I'm swanning around trying to get the hang of all this! Thanks for your help!

I think it depends a bit on what the audition is for.

If it's for a film or TV role, then they will want to see her "being" a character.

You could use a novel for inspiration and adapt a passage, but she should learn it and present it to camera as the narrator - like a sort of video diary. Better still, if you can find some passages with dialogue in them, you could cut and paste the dialogue together to form a speech. It doesn't have to be long to be fit for purpose.

A number of authors have had their children's novels adapted for stage (and in some cases, screen) so you could also try getting hold of those. (I'm thinking of authors like Roald Dahl and Jacqueline Wilson).

Stagescripts has a section on young people's plays - so that's another possible hunting ground. There are also published collections of monologues for young people - your library may have copies, or you could find them on-line.
