The Globe Young Players -casting this summer

Re: The Globe Young Players -casting this summer
We, too, received the email today which was very disappointing as we will be away on holiday. It wasn't really a surprise, as I had posted earlier, I was told when I called them recently that the auditions would be at the end of July- they were timed to coincide with the completion of the summer term for Southwark school students. .Still, we were hoping that maybe they might come up with an earlier date. As all the public schools in London finish so much earlier- those dates are probably the most likely for many families to be away. Sounds like the National Theatre was much more organised and thoughtful about this.
It is a pity, for many of us who will be away, because, despite the negatives of the audition process- they are really not looking for known children with lots of experience and the project will provide education and training and would be a classy credit for anyone's CV. Best of luck to those who can make it.

We are not london but finishing 24th July... How much earlier are London schools finishing then?emma7 wrote:We, too, received the email today which was very disappointing as we will be away on holiday. TBH I wish we WERE away, can't afford a holiday this year and I know I would rather be on a beach somewhere.....

I live in London and finish on the 19th but 5 days is quite a while. I always get really annoyed knowing that my American cousins finished school over a week ago........riverdancefan wrote:We are not london but finishing 24th July... Dd not London and finishing on 5th July (she's at a private school). The competition for this is going to be insane. Dd would love to do it but we wouldn't be able to constantly keep going up to London if she got in, particularly in the intense rehearsal period mentioned.
Good luck to all NAPMers who brave the queues!

It doesn't look like it will be a workshop/audition, they will allocate 5 minutes each child to perform two very short pieces, one of your choice and one to choose from a list that it will given to everyone that register.

Re: The Globe Young Players -casting this summer
I am London (private school) and finish on 5th but I also have a 9/10 week summer holiday and all my holidays are longer which means I can do all of the rehearsals quite easily x
One day everyone will make it, but for now I'm still waiting http://www.starnow.co.uk/phoebespence1
Re: The Globe Young Players -casting this summer
Most private schools in London finish quite early. My son finishes on july 3rd and my daughter on july 11- these are pretty normal in West London and Central London private schools.

We, luckily are London, and break up on 12th....but we are in Lincolnshire (camping
) during that week. My DH will not be at all impressed, but I am going to wait and see what date/time DD is offered for round 1 and then decide if we can escape for one day...imho its too good an opportunity to miss...its her style of acting to a T....but its a cattle market so chances the usual slim to zero! If they want inexperienced kids - does that mean abit of am dram is OK but not a west end run...surely they are unlikely to have many applications from those who have not set foot on a stage?
Good Luck to any other NAPMers who give it a go...

Re: The Globe Young Players -casting this summer
DD breaks up on 24th July and then we go on 25th (Ferry booked for 8.30 a.m!). So we won't be going to the audition. Really can't believe they are only offering four days of auditions - and no flexibility. Shame on them. Will be emailing tomorrow.
Re: The Globe Young Players -casting this summer
I was thinking of emailing too. Just to let them know that they are cutting out a great many children who would have a lot to offer to this project. Frankly, they could have held some auditions earlier in July, or at the end of August which would have made much more sense. Not sure they would really care and maybe it is not appropriate to articulate this. My hunch is that really they want students from the area local to the theatre- a reaching out to the community kind of thing (despite how it is advertised). The Globe participates with many London schools in short-term or one day projects, so they probably feel they do enough in that respect. In fact, my daughter's school will be taking part in a workshop at the Globe, but unfortunately it will only be for year 10 and above, so she will miss out as she's going into year 9 .
Re: The Globe Young Players -casting this summer
I think they will miss out on a lot of kids by having the auditions in the school holidays. If you look at the run dates, they're also throughout the Easter holidays too.
It works both ways really - we complain if they miss too much school and then when the audition and run are in the school holidays we moan as it ruins the only break we get all year......
For us personally, we could have made the auditions and all the rehearsals but we are away next April
I hope this is really successful and they pick 16 really talented kids who do a great job and don't sign up to half the rehearsals before they announce they have holiday plans !! then hopefully they will keep running it every year.
from me for The Globe - for giving our kids this opportunity.

The official words on the pack:
"On each day of the auditions we will be running a ticketed system. Upon arrival, there will be Globe staff managing the queue and you will be presented with a ticket that will indicate a rough timeframe during which you will be seen. While we will do our best to see people as soon as possible, please be prepared to wait your turn as we are expecting a very high volume of applicants.
Please note the queue for auditions will open at 9.30am and close at 6.30pm. Admissions will not be permitted after
this time."
Like someone said on a previous post, expect 'Stadium' sized queues. How many kids could they see in 32 hours? I've done my calculations, but what do other people reckon? ... Unless of course they've been selective of who they invite. Although not heard any reports of people who haven't been replied to from their initial submission.
Also, I think a lot of people will not realise that it will not be until the 3rd round that they will find out whether they have actually got in or not.

Well, that's right- the real audition process is in September. This is just a quick screening to decrease the numbers- all the more reason to have done it on sensible dates. Oh well, far too remote to change vacation plans I think. I look forward to hearing how the process is from those who can make it.
