I agree Robin
It’s definitely like a casting - my DS was almost told this at one audition (in a roundabout way)
They have the ‘3rd year showcase’ already in mind and are almost casting 1st year auditionees for that show
Sometimes, no matter how talented, your face/voice/style just doesn’t fit that year

My DD has nearly completed all her auditions and has received a few offers, but we are uncertain whether to try and stretch ourselves financially and take up the Foundation Year offer at LIPA (there is no guarantee that she would then get onto the degree course - last year only 3 students who did the Foundation Year were offered places on the degree) or to take the safer option of a funded degree at Stella Mann. She is also on the reserve list for Bird and is waiting to hear from Performers / LSC.
We really want to make the right decision, as well as safeguarding her training.
Any advice would be appreciated - Thank you.
My DD did the Open Day at Stella Mann with a view to applying. She enjoyed the day, but whilst it was a long, tiring day, she didn’t find the standard of dance particularly challenging. She also got a sense it was quite commercial so we looked into the course content a bit more and discovered they only do a maximum (they can do less) of 3 ballet classes a week, one of which is strength and conditioning, which (for what my DD is looking for) is not enough. A lot depends on what your DD wants from her training and what her ultimate goal is. For us, Stella Mann was just not right. Hope that helps?

Sorry from me too. DD was really sad not to get a recall for GSA, she got one last year but not this time even though she felt she did very much better and has been doing a foundation too plus there was the dance workshop which she is strong on and she already had the grades. I think it was not even getting a recall that hurt her. She knows how much of a sacrifice the foundation is for us and felt she had let us down. Far from it though, I am really proud of her and how she has done this year.
I do think it is a "casting" situation in some ways for GSA - they are looking for a group of people and sometimes you are not right for it that year. At her recall last year the people who got an interview at the end of the day were not necessarily the most obviously good stand-out candidates but had a particular look. Obviously they were really good but DD said she thought there were people who were amazing and didn't get picked so don't be disheartened.
My DS too has done foundation with the hopes he would be in a better place this year. But not seeming to have much luck (other than arts ed recall which seems like a lifetime ago!), whereas his college mates are getting recalls/offers. 3 from his course are at Mountview recall next week, he had a recall last year with not as much experience but nothing this year with more experience - so that was the most disappointing and can empathise. I too agree about the casting, they know what they are looking for - he is that type of person who will understand the reason and move on.
Thank you everyone, yes just Central now left who have a whopping great 18 places on offer

I had heard that a lot of degree students get offered reserve at Bird which then becomes a place further down the line - it is only a rumour, but I know three girls who've ended up at Bird starting with a reserve degree offer. Maybe they don't offer many straight places at this stage?
Bird do have a lot of movement on their reserve lists very late in the year ie June/July but they do offer quite a few places at audition (especially for early auditions) 5 of Dd's cohort were offered on the day and are commencing there in September.

Yesterday she was offered a DaDA at her first choice college so she has decided to accept the place and not attend any further recalls or auditions.
That’s great news. I’m glad you started this thread it’s been a massive help to me and DD x

She was offered an unconditional on the spot to a college which although doesn’t itself provide vocational training runs a 40h a week HNC with a 90% success rates of students going to top London colleges after the course. Dd is over the moon as we hadn’t expected a yes from this one !
Brilliant news. Well done to your DD x

Sorry to hear that Livethedream!! It's so hard for them (and us).
I am still trying to convince my daughter to look at other courses and do more auditions than just Chichester. I thought that PPA looked good and they still have auditions, but she needs a second monologue for that one and her drama teacher is currently away over easter so she is reluctant to apply as she feels she will be under prepared finding a piece and rehearsing it by herself.
Also, does anyone know anything about The Brighton Academy? Can anyone offer recommendation for the Musical theatre degree course, or is it one to avoid? They also have audition dates still available - I don't know anything about it, it just popped up on my facebook this evening.
Thanks everyone xx

Mountview actually said that up front to parents when I was there for the first round. Once they get down to the final recall day, they will see who works well together and who fits in to make a cohesive group at get the ~70 down to 38. They didn't say appearance specifically, but it was implied.

Interesting. Was that for degree places or diploma or both?
I had heard the reserve thing in particular related to those who applied for degree places.

Funny you mention that because it turns out my DS also has a recall at Brighton Academy (first round was at DS' college). I don't know much about them, I did ask on here a while ago and other than someone say they had heard good things from people they knew who were attending. I know they have their showcase in London tomorrow too. I think this their first year doing the course with degree.

Yes I remember hearing that too last year. But I do think they have an idea when putting people forward for recalls. I saw the people who got recalls come out (only 10 that day out of 120!) the day my DS auditioned and remember thinking when looking at the boys how fit they looked and had dancer type physique, so assumed this is what they were looking for on that day. DS college have too implied it depends on the day you audition too and what they are looking for on that day. Like I've said before, but like cricket

Thanks, that's really helpful. Are the recalls not on the same day then?? All the travel expenses and my time off work is really starting to add up!

Recalls differ from college to college. I know Arts Ed have recalls on the same day but I think most of the others have a recall on a different day. It is an expensive business auditioning. When DS went to his auditions he actually insisted he go on his own. Certainly cut the cost of things!!
