Hi everyone, I'm new. I've read through this post (which is very interesting) and now I'm scared. :? My DD (does that mean daughter?) is going to start her auditions this Sunday for a Mt Degree. The first one being at Urdang then later we have Bird and GSA. I feel like we are one of those unprepared people that you sometimes talk about. Haha. The good thing is that my DD has been training in dance for around 13 years and she's now in Adv 2 Modern and Tap and Adv 1 Ballet. I know that doesn't mean she great but I think the dancing side she should be ok with. (Hopefully) She's a very good singer and has had some lead parts in school/college productions. That's all good. But, now for the bad.. She is only just learning her monologue... now... with only a few days to go. And she's been given a different song to learn which is really hard with only a few days to go!! Ok, I admit, I'm panicking just a little. From the sounds of it, a lot of girls and boys have been practising for months. Just hope she manages to pull it out of the bag somehow. Good luck to everyone auditioning. It sounds like we are on the brink of quite an experience.

The adrenaline will help her through it! Make sure she isn't learning something that is too long (quite a few people do). Best to err on the side of brevity. Easier to learn if she hasn't got long and will still show them what she can do. I've helped some people prepare for auditions and advised them to cut their speeches by almost 50% in some cases  Some have come with speeches lasting 4 minutes or more.

Wishing her the best of luck.

No I don't think it's very long (under 2 minutes). May be I shouldn't be panicking. She told me tonight "I'll be fine".. But she hasn't auditioned before so I'm not sure if she realises quite how stiff the competition is. Thanks very much for your advice :)

Do wish her luck!! & suggest she enjoys it :D

My DD started Ballet at 14 but hasn't got as far as your (just Grade 6 so far) & Modern Grade 6 soon (hopefully)

Performers was the college that shocked my DD rigid! the 2 she did before that were in her comfort zone

Hi bop2thetop - we will also be at Urdang on Sunday! My dd will be 16 this week so auditioning for diploma not degree it is also our first audition so feeling a bit wobbly too! It seems a very long day 9 - 6.30 songs are preparedish and monologue the same - hired a local studio tonight to practise solo dances she needs for other auditions and had a bit of an OMG moment but a bit calmer now! Good luck to your dd x

Well done to your nephew Jomist. As you say it does show what can be achieved by having the right attitude, the determination and being prepared to work for it. I hope he gets to where he wants to be.
I would just like to clarify from my earlier post that I by no means meant to say that you have to be a certain level/grade to apply somewhere, although it may have come across that way. All the schools and colleges are looking for talent and potential and something they can work with. Some people may not be quite ready when they first audition. My criticism was more aimed at those who seem to automatically assume they have a right to a place, who go into the audition process expecting multiple offers and to get into their 1st choice of college. I have been on the receiving end recently of some pretty nasty comments from mothers bitterly disappointed that their DDs have not got into colleges they wanted with a lot of the comments rubbishing my DD, despite the fact that I never even knew their DDs were auditioning until a few days before hand. The outcome of an audition is never a foregone conclusion but you do learn from experience and having the right attitude is important.

Good luck to everyone who is still auditioning! DD1 has now been offered a place at Performers and on Saturday was offered a degree course place at Bird on the day! This means she can actually go to study MT as we fall outside the boundaries for a DADa and can't afford the Laines fees of £16k a year or Performers fees of £14k. She has 2 auditions to go for degree courses but we would be really happy if she went to Bird.
Bop2thetop - your DD sounds like she will be fine for Bird and Urdang; I don't know enough about GSA as DD is not applying there.

Oh WOW dance&smile that's amazing!! Well done to your DD she must be very very good and you must be thrilled. To be offered it on the day as well. Wow! Does she have a lot of stage experience? My DD is auditioning for Bird on 27th Feb and she would love to do the MT degree course too. But I'm well aware of how difficult it is to get on it. I agree, there's no way we could afford any where like Laines or Performers so we're not even auditioning there. I don't know how people do afford it. If anyone knows please tell me. Apart from remortgaging your house which I really don't want to do. As much as we love and want to support our DD we haven't got a spare £15000 a year knocking around. Haha.
Jomist - congratulations to your nephew. It takes so much perseverance as well as talent to get on to these courses by the sounds of it. I'm full of admiration for anyone who keeps going. I think it will stand him in good stead for the future too because auditioning for parts will be just as competitive, I'm sure.
SueSmith - I may see you on Sunday at Urdang then. Are we allowed to go in with them do you know? I haven't been to an open day and I was hoping to be able to. Yes it's a very long day. But at least they get their money's worth. I think I will just tell my DD to enjoy it as I do think it's going to be extremely hard to get in. Having said that 'you've got to be in it to win it'. I think my DD so far would prefer GSA. But that is a more for actors/singers I think. Although dance does come in to it. However to be fair to Urdang and Bird we haven't actually been there yet so it could all change when we go and see them. Having said that it's not really about where you prefer but where prefers you.

Good luck to everyone. I'm feeling a bit nervous I must admit. :?

Huge congratulations to your DD Dance&Smile. I bet there were celebrations in your house on Saturday. And good luck to everyone else with their auditions still to come. Try and enjoy the experience regardless of the outcome. My DD enjoyed all of her auditions and made friends along the way.

Fantastic news DanceandSmile. My dd has been on a couple of summer courses at Bird and loved it and is certainly high on her list for next year. =D> =D> I think I have just twigged SueSmith who you are. Does your daughters name begin with M? I am A's mum. Let me know how Urdang went. Another one on our list for the degree course.
