Hi. My ds's theatre group have just announced that they are going to be doing 'Billy Elliot' as their next show. Unfortunately, he cant do ballet (but can do a great Geordie accent :D ) and was wondering about auditioning for the part of Michael. Does anyone know if Michael is required to dance?

Big tap routine if it is as writ'. Otherwise needs to be very expressive, soleful/doleful eyes at thought of then reality of losing billy. Plus lots of either occasional camp or very straight/ deadpan (director will determine) humour dressing up in tutu. Will find youtube link of main number

Our local Billy Youth Theatre had a Billy and Michael who had never done ballet or tap, but it was still a great show. I think they find the right actors then choreograph the routines to fit round what they can be taught in the time. For instance they used ballet girls tapping away in the background when the 2 boys sang Expressing Yourself.

Good Luck!

remember - there is also the 'tall boy' role - the older multi-purpose extra - 3rd boy in gym, boy in village, posh boy going for ballet exam
