CRY Cardiac Risk in the Young

A very close friend of mine has asked that i help her in trying to obtain as many signatures as possible, she lost her 21 yr old son in April last year very suddenly, his death was attributed to sudden adult death, which is associated with undiagnosed heart conditions. The CRY charity are trying to raise awareness and they do fantastic work screening young adults for potential problems. My 2 boys (aged 15) were screened last year and i am thankful that they were ok.
Please could you take the time to look at the website and sign the petition. thankyou in advance.

Coroners Bill Campaign Update - please sign our petition! 9th February 2011

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Help us to get justice for the families of fit and healthy young people in the UK who are dying from undiagnosed heart conditions. Every week in the UK, 12 young people (under 35 years) die suddenly from undiagnosed heart conditions. While this figure is shocking, we believe it could be much higher than this.

In the case of young sudden cardiac death, coroners are NOT presently required to refer hearts to an expert cardiac pathologist, leaving family members at risk of further deaths from genetic heart conditions.

Please read Peter Teale’s heart-breaking story below.

The government is attempting to abolish previous plans to introduce the role of Chief Coroner - the revised Coroners and Justice Bill could be in the House of Commons in the next two weeks. This vital role will ensure national standards are enforced and stop the current post code lottery of experience for bereaved families.

CRY has a petition - http://www.gopetition.com/petition/42581.html - the more signatories we get, the more pressure there will be on the government to take this issue seriously. Please sign it now and forward this on to as many of your friends as possible.

Peter Teale’s story

Peter’s fitness instructor daughter, Zoe, was 23 years old when she died in her sleep on 15 September 2009.

“With sudden death, you don’t have the opportunity to pray for a child’s survival, have the chance to say goodbye or even to be there with them to hold their hand as they pass away“ said Peter Teale, Zoe’s father. “Zoe had an incredible zest for life and it has been absolutely devastating to have her taken away from us.”

“What was also hard was the way that we were treated by the coroner. It took three requests to get Zoe’s heart released (you lose your powers of guardianship in a sudden death case) for specialist examination at CRY’s heart unit at the Royal Brompton, where it was found that Zoe had inherited a heart condition from my wife that she too was unaware of. It also took two months to bury my daughter, which was an intensely distressing experience”.

CRY’s campaign to urge the government to re-think the proposed abolition of the Chief Coroner role (see www..c-r-y.org.uk/coronersbillcampaign.htm) has already seen CRY supporters contact more than 70 MPs to express their concerns:

Thankyou to everyone who has signed the petition, it seems this condition unfortunately is more common than we think, please have a look at the cry website also, as it gives details of screening programmes throughout the UK, this consists of doing an ECG and possibly an echo if required.
I will inform my friend of all the links and signatures. once again thankyou to you all.
