So, a friend of DD has just completed a foundation course at a well known performing arts college and auditioned for the 3 year MT course at the same place...only to be turned down!!! How does that work then? surely that must reflect on the college itself....

Is anyone else in the same position? My dd is trying to console her friend but does not really know what to say to her...

Sorry to hear this Sadly a foundation course is no guarantee of a place on the full course ... good luck to your DD's friend. Does she have any other auditions lined up?

I guess if someone better auditions on the day, then that's who they will take..it's in their favour to recruit the best applicants, I always think these things happen for a reason and she will find somewhere better or more-suited to her needs, although that doesn't help the way she feels now..

She has a place at another college, but is on the reserve list for a DADA..and without funding I am not sure that she will be able to go...I think she is looking into a local college for the time being and just waiting to see what happens...


We just feel so sorry for her...

She got on the foundation course in the first place because they didn't think she was equipped to go onto the full course at the time she auditioned and applied, sadly - it does look like she still hasn't got whatever it is they're looking for. So she is presumably lacking something in the dance/drama/singing area. However - she would have had all sorts of assessments during the foundation course - and possibly grades too. Worth re-looking at what her teachers said about her. Almost certainly the weak or problem areas will be detailed there.

I will pass on the advice and see what she decides to do...

The trouble with auditions is that you are not just auditioning against the criteria of what they want but also other people. What I mean by that is that she may be talented but as others have said on the day others were better. Its very frustrating, but although you may have been good, others were better. But thats not to mean she is not good enough, on another day she may have been. The fact that she has an offer at another place is encouraging.

Forgot to say that don't forget the disadvantage of a foundation course is that they may have seen other er, attributes - she could be an excellent singer, dancer or actress - BUT could have other more negative features that really wind people up. I've seen people with amazing laziness, or others who are brilliant working on their own, but a liability working in a group. Some people cannot work in groups - their attitude is all wrong. So if the friend of your daughter's is an excellent performer - does she have any other drawbacks that could have put them off? When I was teaching, we found these 'solo' people very difficult to integrate into groups, and when casting productions, they had to have the main roles - because being the second spear carrier on the back row would have been a disaster. If you know her well - look past there performance skills and consider the person? It's a bit like being a physcologist.
