Hi everyone.
My DD is starting to apply for places for next september when she will have finished her two year musical theatre b tech course. She wants to do a BA in musical theatre which is for 3 yrs. She has a couple of university's in mind and the rest are performing arts colleges. Someone has mentioned to me that she can only get a student loan for university's and not for the arts colleges so this now has me worrying. Does anyone know how you go about getting funding for these places or who to contact regarding this?
Also she seems determined to only be applying for all the "well known" places down in London. Can anyone reccomend any other places in the midlands or up north she should at least consider?

My ds is at Arts Ed doing a BA in Musical Theatre. You are eligible for the student loans in the same way as the universities but the amount is only £6,000 as opposed to the £9,000 for uni's. The student maintenance allowance is also the same as for universities. Most of the "well known" colleges charge around £12,000 odd per year so it does mean that you have to find the extra finances yourself. Not sure what is happening regarding DADA's any more. There are a limited amount of scholarships offered by these colleges too but not sure how you go about applying for these - think you may have to be invited to audition for a scholarship. I am sure there are some more knowledgable people on here who can give you more info but hope this helps. Good luck.

I was at the Oxford School of Drama on Friday and chatted to someone in the office. Apparently DaDAs will continue pretty much as they were before. They will be administered differently (by the colleges themselves) but according to the person I spoke to "the prospective student shouldn't really notice any difference". I didn't have time to find out anything more concrete than this, but it sounded reasonably reassuring. Oxford doesn't do a 3 year course in Musical Theatre, so it's not relevant for your dd for Oxford, but is relevant if she is considering any other DaDA courses.

Your dd can certainly consider any of the schools on the NCDT website (but the only one I can see that does 3 years MT outside London is in Scotland, not sure whether I have overlooked any others). All the accredited courses have been assessed as providing good training for the profession. It definitely does make a lot of sense to stick to these, as they will be courses that are well regarded in the industry.
