Hi,
I have been contacted by the director of a short film over a social networking site. The person sent me a link to their website and it seems as if they are legitimate but should I ask them to re-contact me via my agent just to make sure this isn't a scam or anything?

I think contacts via social networking sites are quite common, but you are wise to treat it with caution. I think I would be inclined to investigate myself a bit first and find out what they are offering and whether you might be interested. I always run everything by my agent if I get a contact directly - I like to get her view on the usefulness of the offer etc. - but I've usually found out a bit about it first to see whether I might be interested (because there's no point bothering my agent if I think it's a waste of time!). You can be quite non-commital I think. If they have contacted you then they are clearly interested so the ball is in your court and you can ask any questions you like about what sort of commitment is required, payment/expenses etc. If there is money involved I would definitely ask them to go via your agent - agent's usually thrash out better deals than actors get direct!
On the other hand - you could just leave it all to your agent!
