Dear all,
This is my fist time posting so forgive me if I am in the wrong place! I am a 17 year old girl and after submitting cvs and head shots to agencies, one has asked me to send them a self taped monologue to camera. I have never done this before and so it would be very helpful if someone could give me some advice as to any suggestions of monologues to do for agencies and how I should film it and send it to them! Please, If someone could reply as soon as possible it would be very much appreciated! Thank you!

Find something modern and as close to you in age, accent and "type" as you can. They want to assess how you will come across in auditions for things you are likely to be called in for, if you see what I mean, so make this easy for them. Don't choose Shakespeare or something written for someone much older than you.

Give your name at the beginning.

Frame it so that you are in reasonable close up. Try to make sure that the lighting and sound is as good as possible with the equipment you have. Experiment with delivering the lines just off camera, as if the person you are talking to is standing or sitting just to the side of it. Monologues to camera are very rare beasts on screen. They can work well for audition purposes, but experimenting with alternatives is worth while. Either way, you need to imagine that you are talking to a real living person in the room with you. If you are delivering it to camera, then that person is through (not at) the camera lens. In some speeches you are likely to need to sense the reaction of that person and the effect you are having on them as you speak. If it is a genuine soliloquy it can be helpful to imagine your character's self as that other person - so if you are asking questions, you are asking them outside yourself. It doesn't mean the speech can't be reflective in nature - often the most effective audition pieces for screen are reflective - but it is likely to seem more alive if you are aware of another being as you speak. Does that make sense? I'm not sure I've explained it very well! Don't be afraid of silence. Watching someone genuninely thinking (in character, not searching for the lines!) can be mesmerising.

Keep it short! You need to know it really well, so that you can appear spontaneous and natural. 50 seconds of brilliantly delivered work is far, far more effective than 4 minutes of something you are struggling to remember. It is highly likely that an agency won't watch more than a minute in any case.
