Help! What is a self tape?

Hello,if any of you could help me I would be so grateful!

I have been asked to do a '1 minute self tape on my phone'. Obviously I understand that a self tape is me taping myself, but I have not been given any script or anything to film! Does this mean I should choose a monologue to perform? Or should this tape just be me introducing and talking about myself??

Thank you!!!

A bit of both. Introduce yourself then do a SHORT monologue xx

To be honest I think you need to go back and ask the person who has asked you to self tape what it is they would like to see. It really could be either of those things. I think they have been short-sighted/disorganised in not telling you what they need.

If it's for a film then I would go for the monologue if you prefer not to go back and ask them what they want. If I were casting anything where an actor had to play a character (rather than leading a workshop for example) then I would want to see acting - not presenting.

phoebz is right in that you could do a brief introduction and then a monologue - but the introduction would have to be very brief ( just your name, pretty much) if you are also going to include a monologue and come in at under a minute.
