Casting with no script - improv

Hi all!

DD has a casting tomorrow for a feature film (we live in Australia, so it isn't one listed on here) and I was hoping for some wise words or advice.

It is a closed casting (think that's the right term for castings that aren't made public? Only to talent agents?) so the only information I have is from DD's agent and my own speculation!
Details from the agent were just forwarded from the casting agent - "We are seeing girls for the small roles. There is nothing to prepare, it is just for a chat and perhaps a quick improv. Please come looking very natural and with no make up, and no special dresses or hair please. Also, can the parents please come with their child's current height in feet and inches, and current weight in pounds."

So my question is, how does DD prepare for this?? What should she expect when they say they will have a chat and quick improv? Any tips?

We're super excited and happy she has been requested for this first stage, but we know it's going to be very competitive as it's a high profile film. We'll have our fingers crossed, but we'll be realistic too.

Anywayz, I'd appreciate any tips, advice or entertaining anecdotes from the vast NAPM combined experience!

My thoughts would be to absolutely NOT prepare anything - just let your DD go and have fun. Whilst my DS hasn't had an improv audition for a job his audition for his agent was along these lines. They just want to see how the kids are naturally and how well they can take direction. Just let her enjoy it and very best of luck :D

With impro you don't need to go through anything, the team will give them direction when in there, or ideas and will probably be done in groups. Is often how they get the best from the children and from my experience, the kids come out having had an absolute blast :)

Does your daughter know what Improv is? My DS did his first film casting in a workshop session when he was 10 and had no idea what the CD meant when she asked for Improvisation so just tried to copy the kids in front so altho it sounds obvious please just explain to her what it is if they might use that word! Good luck!

Whilst they obviously just want her to be free and relaxed, it often makes it easier to relax by having at least something half-prepared! I would think of a funny anecdote. A good friend of mine is a casting director and once asked a child what her favourite subject as school was.... I can't remember the childs response now but it was funny enough for my friend to be repeating the story days later, remember her and obviously invite her back for a recall.
