HI - New to this site but looking for advice on 6th Form Boarding Schools with strong Drama/Performing Arts department.

We currently live overseas but DS has indicated that he would like to come back to UK for this A levels. Not looking for a full-time Performing Arts School at this stage as he wants to keep his options open.

Have family in the South East to something around there would be good but happy to look at any recomendations you may have.

thanks in Advance

http://www.thehammondschool.co.uk/drama/post-16/ This might be of interest to you - although it is in the north west. Sixth form students live with landladies who provide meals and do their washing for them. The school has 11-16 boarders on strands for dance, drama or music. Post 16 there are 3 options - Drama or the higher education dance and musical theatre courses.

Thanks for the replies - have actually looked at both of these - Hammond School puts me off a little as it is not 'full boarding' in sixth form which is a shame as it looks quite good and not sure i can bank roll Hurtwood House :( - any other suggestions out there? Does anyone know of any of the State Boarding Schools that have a strong rep for Drama or MT?

Is the such a thing as a state boarding school?
I've never heard of one and certainly not a performing arts one.....I would love to know too.

State boarding schools are rare but I know of Thomas Adams School and College in Shropshire. It is a state school with a boarding facility. The website has lots of info http://www.thomasadams.org.uk
I don't have personal experience of the school, but a headteacher we knew sent both her sons there, although that was over 20 years ago!

There are a number of state boarding schools but I don't really know anything about them - certainly not heard of any with specialism in drama/performing arts.

Re Hammond - most 6th form students under the age of 18 live with landladies within walking distance of the school. Usually there are at least 3 students in each house. The school gives out a list of approved accommodation.

St Bedes/Legat School is a boarding school that could be worth a look but I do not know how affordable it is

Tring Park School offer a wide selection of academic A levels which you study alongside the performing arts side of things. In fact this year both the head boy and head girl have gone on to study academic subjects at top universities. Hurtwood is another good one but not sure many bank balances would like that option - it is a sixth form college specialising in the arts but I think it is THE most expensive school I have come across!

I don't know that much about state boarding schools but we have one near us and it is only weekly boarding so would be a bit of a problem if living abroad.

No boarding option, but worth a look. An amazing school that grows from strength to strength and it's government funded for the courses you're interested in.
