After all year of working on her monologue for auditions her college has said she has to have a new one for 3 weeks time

She really isn't a great actor & leans towards the funny & can't do accents - she is 17, mixed race & a typical 'dancer'


So any suggestions?

I found a lot on Youtube that can be adapted to fit.

Check out DNA by Dennis Kelly ... there are some very good and funny monologues for teenage girls in there. There are also some good monologues for teens in Tusk Tusk by Polly Stenham. Hope she finds something she likes!

There's a play about an older teenage schoolgirl, called Chewing Gum Dreams, or something like that. It's all a monologue so plenty to choose from, the woman who wrote it and initially performed it (it's personal experience) is black and it does include some racial references so perfect for a teenage girl who is black or mixed race.

Thanks - she is leaning towards something from Chorus line I think (gutted as I wanted one by Joyce Grenfell that I was told about)

Have to say I think A Chorus Line is a fantastic material choice for a monologue from a dancer's perspective. The way and reason it was written fits very well to reflect her interests, and so will also hit elements of truth within her, and potentially come across more authentically.

They wouldn't let her do it

Which is a shame as - as you said, A Chorus Line was perfect for her

I've done something with Sophie's bit at the start of Mamma Mia or a piece called Doris from My Mother always told me; but she doesn't really like either much

Ah, I see. Another great contemporary UK play that we've used with students is Constellations by Nick Payne.

It's well worth a read regardless, but there are lovely monologue moments within it.
