LOL. Moneypenny, it's fine. I wasn't offended. And now I feel like James Bond.
Bizzy, the reason I'm all for the agent/manager tandem is this: your agent, as a rule, is a negotiator. He's there to find jobs, sure, but he's also there to do deals, make you money and be aggressive.
You manager, on the other hand, uses a more personal touch - his first duty is to look after you and your needs. That said, he also goes on the lookout for work for you.
In terms of their work-finding, managers tend to associate more with casting directors, while agents deal with producers, so it doubles your chances.
There's a whole bunch of other stuff a manager does for you, too. He usually handles your PR and things for you on the side and various other perks as your career progresses. For example, he usually has some accounting skills, or contacts in that area and is good for managing your fiscal portfolio. So while both find you work and the agent is getting you paid, your manager and your accountant then get that money working for you.
It's long, complex and boring to explain properly, but you can have one without the other and, as a general rule, managers are much easier to get.

hi, thanks for clearing that up HP, a very interesting read, I do know a few child actors who have managers but that is after they have had at least two good movies behind them.

Yeah, you get a lot of them who want credits and all that good stuff. Some don't mind though, lets them build you from the ground up. Plus, it's always fun to watch agents fight with managers. They're like cats and dogs.
That said, managers can be anyone, really. My best mate is mine at the moment. I mean, it's not her 'job' per se, but she fills most of the same roles for me.

haha, i see what you are saying. But i think something that huge wouldn't really do anything for me.. like why would they put all there effort into an unkown 16 year old when they are making so much money out of the big people without even trying..Holland Park wrote:Ahh, see, you'd be more than extremely lucky to get a CAA or ICM - among their collective client bases are Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet. LOL.whateverlife wrote:Ha ha. Fair enough. I think i judge a 'big agency' depending on who they represent. for me the ones that i would be extremely lucky to be represented by would be ARG, Hamilton Hodell, United Agents, and Curtis Brown.
A mid size one would be someone like BWH.
But thats just my veiw and the ones i've heard of. There are so many around its hard to know really.
So are you a director/ actor/ parent?
I'm many things - an actor, director, producer, writer, comedian, parent, child, human and cyborg.
I made one of those up in an attempt to be funny. I'm not really a human.
But yeah, umm, I'm pretty much a jack-of-all-trades. I'm hoping to keep my kids away from performing, actually. I guess it's one of those things where, when you grow up performing and you see the darker side, you try and protect your own kids from it. I mean, I wouldn't stop them doing it if they wanted to, but I'm not going to push them into it, either.
well, if you wern't a cyborg, i wouldn't be talking to you..
I am currently an ammeter producer, assistant director, actress, and receptionist. and sometimes a substitute casting director.
Thanks for all the advice. x

Hard to say, really. When I got my first agent, they already knew all about me. I went in, chatted for a while then signed papers, so I'm as interested to find out what they ask as you are!

Nice to know it went well. Hopefully they'll follow up with watching you perform. I actually looked at the Curtis Brown website the other day and I've got to be honest, I'm tempted to approach them. You know, since Ari Emanuel seems to have lost my number

Re: what does it all mean??
haha, thanks. I was a little dissapointed.. but other actors say that they can't get anyone like curtis brown to see their stuff, so i guess its better than i think it is.
Hopefully they will come! they are looking for girls with 'my look'.
Go for it Holland Park.. (i hate using these fake names..)
Thanks for the advice everyone,

Re: what does it all mean??
I might just do that.
I actually just applied for a job at William Morris Endeavor. Worst case scenario, I'll be my own agent
