LAMDA Speech
Trying to find out a bit of information about LAMDA speech. Is it the drama LAMDA or is it something else? Dd want's to do it but I am wondering how usefull it is to have???

Re: LAMDA Speech
do you mean "spoken verse and prose"?
If that's the case, they prepare a poem and a prose reading (one has to be taken from LAMDA's set book and the other you can do your own choice)
DD's just done her Grade 4 and is preparing for grade 5, so while I'm no expert, I have plenty of experience in them!! Once you get past grade 5 (onto 6, 7 and
you earn UCAS points for them - I think off the top of my head, it's 65 UCAS points for a distinction at grade 8, which is worth more (on paper at least) than an AS level at Grade A!!
So that all seems quite worthwhile, although I don't know how much use those points are in practice as we've not reached that stage yet. I bet Welshmum would though (our resident Head of 6th form!!!)
Anything else you want to know?

Re: LAMDA Speech
Nicola, that is intresting as I was lead to belive that u only got the points when you got to the last exam which is the gold award oldest ds did his silver drama Lamda award about 2 years ago did not think he earned any points even thought he got distinction, think at grade 8 you have to do Bronze Sliver then last exam is Gold it may have changed in the few years since oldest ds left,
Re: LAMDA Speech
Bronze, silver and gold have mutated into Grades 6, 7 and 8 respectively. You get 65 points for a distinction at Grade 8 (or "gold" as it was), 55 for grade 7 (silver) and 40 for grade 6 (bronze)
This means that theoretically speaking, if my DD continues with her grades, getting similar results, she could already have 130 UCAS points before she even gets to 6th form! (as she's doing the "spoken verse and prose" strand as well as "solo drama")

Re: LAMDA Speech
I see I think ds will be doing grade 5 or 6 next year so he will be the same drama teacher said she may do speach with him for 1 or 2 years as they used to only be able to do the last exam wehen they where 18 he only has 9 leasons a year.
Re: LAMDA Speech
thanks for ther replies! dd had her first lesson today ~ she can choose between 'musical theatre' 'drama' or 'verse and prose'....which one to choose

Yes the LMDA exams (like music exams) do have UCAS points awarded at the higher grades. However, this does not mean that the universities will accept them!! In practice almost all the uni courses ask for all their points to be from A/AS levels. There are some exceptions e.g Welsh Bacc., but generally the other points are only rarely of use, and thats if they actually relate to the subject beojng applied for (such as music exams counting if applying to study Music).
Hope that makes sense. Although the points are a useful incentive,I think the real benefit of activities like these is the deveopment of skills in the pupil and as an indication of determination, commitment etc. They are valuable enough for their own sake, not just the points they "may" carry.

Re: LAMDA Speech
my dd is planning on doing grade 7 and 8 this year in verse and prose she can then do her licentiate so she can eventually teach.
Re: LAMDA Speech
so, as I suspected, and despite their official value, are they worthless when it comes to UNI applications?lthough the points are a useful incentive,I think the real benefit of activities like these is the deveopment of skills in the pupil and as an indication of determination, commitment etc. They are valuable enough for their own sake, not just the points they "may" carry.

Re: LAMDA Speech
It dose help at Unie when they interview them to no that they have been doing Lamda exam for years and gone on to do the last exam some thing else to talk about shows that they can follow some thing through to the end so if there are 2 with the same A levels and and 1 has been taking Lamda exams then prob will pick that 1 dose not matter what degree u are applying for.
