Finding it impossible to find monologues for my ethnicity!

Post by LiveTheDream..x »

I'm eurasian. Half indian. Half white.
I've looked through SO many monologues and i cant find any that suit my casting type. Many people have asked me if I am spanish, greek, italian, latino etc. due to my different looks. So i could play a character of those backgrounds.
Does anybody know of any monologues that will suit somebody of my ethnic background?!
I'm also looking for MT songs if anybody knows of any?

Advice would be much greatly appreciated!

Hi LiveTheDream.

I sympathise as my dd can’t really pass as Asian, more Mediterranean, whereas my ds definitely looks Asian. We haven’t had to find monologues yet, but I am PMing you one suggestion.

Have you got the book by Jennifer Reischel So you want to tread the boards... ? She says as long as there’s no reference in the text to what colour the character is, it is fine, it is only a problem if you chose a text which has strong references to a certain culture and dialect and your own culture is completely different.

What do you need a monologue for? She suggests having 5 or 6 prepared if you are auditioning for drama school; a modern comedy speech, and modern dramatic speech, a comedy speech from Shakespeare, a dramatic speech from Shakespeare, another classical speech that isn’t Shakespeare, and a speech that shows off any special skills like an accent, juggling or acrobatics.

Good Luck!

I agree that I wouldn't worry about ethnicity at all unless it is referred to in script. The same goes for songs.
