Dance and Drama award

It seems very late for thia year for them to be making this sort of decision which will effect so many applicants.

especially as paid out audition fees without at least a glimmer of hope of dada award,that has made me cross as would not have done that without that thought.
I didn't realise that if you do a degree at one of the schools,eg mountview you can apply for some funding via student loan.if you don't get dada this is from their site If you enter as a self-funding student, without a DaDA, you are eligible to apply to the Student Loans Company for a maintenance loan and the optional tuition fee loan (set at £3,225 for 2009/2010) as the Academy has Specific Designation. Any tuition fee loan taken is deducted from full fees each year, the balance being the responsibility of the student. I presumed this would be only for colleges connected with uinversities-that would help a bit,although doesn't cover the whole lot by any means-don't think this would be available for diplomas though that say Millenium dance do,anyone know?

Do not think that the schools/colleges knew any thing until very recently and are waiting to be told more information from the goverment.
DD has been told that the arts council have had their budget decreased, this is not good news.
My opion is that I think they will stop the DaDa's but continue with MADS.

I heard a rumour about this a year ago,think the colleges should have put a warning on their websites,it is funny came on after most of the auditions started

Yes there was a rumour I remember dh telling me about it but then his college at least were told they were going to get the same amount of DaDa's to give out.

All degree courses have to validated by a university so yes, students can apply for student loans in the normal way. Diploma courses on the other hand are validated at most of the drama schools by Trinity Guildhall and are not as far as I know eligible.

Thanks for helpx but student loans at the moment only pay for fees up to about 3,500 don't they? which would help mind you-will change next year of course when uni fees rise-I didn't realise this good to knoww.

I think these awards are generally known as MDS awards and they are offered only by nine music and dance schools. With the excpetion of the Royal Ballet School, they are currently offered only to children in years
7 - 11.

With a child currently in one of these schools, I am obviously interested to know what the future may hold but I believe that sense will prevail and some funding in certain establishmenst will continue. This may be a controversial view, but there are so many dance and drama courses available now that I wonder if the industry would in fact be best served by cutting the funding and concentrating only on those institutions that have a proven track record of significant numbers of their students gaining employment. I know that past students that were in receipt of DaDas from some institutions have recently been contacted to see if they are currently working in the industry.

In dance MDS is mainly upto 16 except RB who get MDS upto 19. In the music schools they also get MDS upto 18. At Tring, Elmhurst and Hammond when you got to 6th form you were offered Dada's and the amount you then have to pay can jump enormously as it is no longer income based apart from the so called maintenance grant for those who earn less than £30K. The scheme did need a review but they have left it very late to tell anyone.

According to Stage newspaper Dada's are safe for the time being!

The Young People's Learning Agency (YPLA) has confirmed that Dance and Drama Awards (DaDAs) will continue to be offered by selected vocational schools entering students for training in 2011. Please contact individual DaDA schools for further information.

Mr Gibb: The Dance and Drama Award scheme will continue in 2011/12. All young people and adults currently in receipt of the Dance and Drama Awards, who started on a two or three year course prior to the academic year 2011/12, will be funded to the end of their courses. Students starting courses in September 2011 will also be able to apply for an award.

From September 2012 onwards, support from the Department for Education to enable students to access specialist dance and drama provision will be focused on young people aged 16-19. We intend to work with the schools currently offering Dance and Drama Awards to consider how best to make such support available. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills will be considering plans for supporting students aged over 19.

Drama and Dance Award funding for those over 19 starting a course in September 2011 is only guaranteed for the 2011/12 academic year. The Government is currently considering if funding will be available for those over 19 after 2011/12.
