Paid / Unpaid Chaperone work

Post by Livy »

Hi,

Just finished chaperoning over the last two weeks and did ask the question at the beginning whether we would be paid. Head Chaperone never replied, one of the other chaperones said we would but nothing's been said. Went to a lot of trouble to renew my licence in time and wondered what other chaperones think? :?

What was the project for? I no if its for the BBC even if yr a regestered chaperion I no the BBC will not give u the full fee. If u where chaperioning for 2 weeks then u should get paid. Are any of yr dc involved with the project. If I was u I would get in touch with the production/ theatre company and ask them, did u have to sign any thing? 2 weeks is a long time to work for fee even if yr children where involved.

I'm pretty sure you are entitled to NMW regardless of what was agreed at the beginning. Have a look at this: http://www.inbrief.co.uk/employees/uk-minimum-wage.htm

It is not necessary to have a contract.

Who were you working for? Don't be afraid to make a claim if you feel you are entitled to payment.

I know this is being wise after the event, but it's obviously better to get this sort of thing in writing before you start. If you refuse to start without the terms and conditions being made clear it is astonishing how quickly someone will sort them out! ;)

I have never been paid for chaperoning but it has been for local dance schools and youth theatres. When Ihave chaperoned for professional companies the children have not been paid either (Ell.en Kent tour, Birmingham stage company etc) and it has been my students involved. For one Ellen Kent show I hired an external chaperone and paid expenses.
