I don't really know anything about music so I don't know if these are good for a mezzo voice. But I know a song that's very bright and bubbly and funny. It's called 'Don't be anything less' from snoopy the musical.

It's way too exagerated in the video but that's the best I could find on you tube

Or what about 'at the begining' it's supposed to be a duet but it sounds just as good sung by one person.

And another one that might be good is 'There's a light over at the frankenstein place'

I think the first one is probs best if you want to show off her acting through the singing and you want something that's quite fun.

Have they said they don't want them to auditon with songs from the SOM ? I was thinking I would probably get her to learn the 16 going on 17 song to be on the safe side, as even if they don't want it at the first auditon, she might not get long to learn it if she gets a quick recall.

Ha ha, I did think I was stating the obvious, but I just thought I'd mention it incase. Sounds like you have it pretty well covered Steffysmum ! Will she try to go for something in the same sort of vane ? Ie something young, gauche, sincere, rather than a dramatic or funny one ? I can see why you're asking for suggestions for other mt songs though, it's quite difficult to think of something else with a similar age syle/ character.
I suppose she could do matchmaker from Fiddler o.t.r. or whistle down the wind.( I'm not a huge fan of either really ) but they're the right sort of age/sentiment perhaps. My dd recently did ' On my Own', but that's a bit more mature. Good one to show off them what you can do though.
Let us know what she decides to do and how it goes. The very best of luck !

At dh's college they advise students to choose a song that is in a similar style and portrays a similar type of character. They will want to see that she can sing legit repertoire. Have a look at other Rogers & Hammerstein shows or even Rogers & Hart.

thanks guys. yeah i was trying to think of something along the same kind of lines as the liesel character but my mind really is blank argh. shes really good at whistle down the wind. dont think she will want to do that though. i was thinking of there are worse things i can do. what do you guys think?? see the trouble is this is the first time shes really got her heart set on a part normally shes happy been in the chorus. and leisel is getting picked from the adults so makes it even harder as theres a lot in there who has done principal parts before and got really good voices and can play younger. ah well all she can do is try her best. she will deff get in the chorus again if nothing else lol.

I would steer away from SOM songs and go for something different...that will make her stand out...go for something that she is really comfortable with and knows really well....
Dont worry about lots of people who have had principal parts before, my dd auditioned for a local show and got oneof the lead roles depsite there being a lot of people there who had taken part before!

Good luck and let us know how she gets on

I'd certainly look for something from the same composing team:

You could look at Oklahoma, Carousel, State Fair, Cinderella (there are some pretty songs in this that aren't that well known e.g. "In my own little corner"), South Pacific (I'm in love with a wonderful guy, Cock eyed optimist - I think either of these would suit a leisl character?), The King and I, Flower Drum Song.

Best of luck to her.

Personally I wouldn't go for 'There are worse thing I can do, as it's about as opposite character wise as you could get I should think. My dd's had a couple of main parts in local MT productions, and we've learned that they've not seemed to be able to imagine her performing anything other than they type of character she's auditioned with, especially if they don't know her to start with ! So we know try to stick to the feel of the character if possible.

I'd agree with Coco about not doing "There are worse things I could do". Not only is it the wrong "tone" for the character, it's also trotted out by so many auditionees!

Can I suggest 'If they could see me now' from Sweet Charity, because it's fun, has a lot of character to show in it and it would probably be good for a mezzo voice.

Anyway good luck with it all!

That's wonderful ! Well done to your dd. And isn't it a relief when they just tell them what they want them to sing. Wishing her the very best of luck for the next round of the auditions.
