Star now????? Should i pay

Post by mummyofmylittlestar »

Sorry again about the number of questions Im asking but as a newbie to all this, it is a little daunting and confusing. i've set up a profile for my dd is it now worthwhile paying the monthly fees? Thanks

you could keep the profile ready and watch out for something you would like to apply for! then at least your not
paying if there is nothing on there for you.

I agree wissymo, I did that, I looked each day until there was something I wanted to apply for, which was about 3 weeks in, then paid for a month at a time until I was sure I wasn't wasting my money. I now do the annual subscription because there are usually some interesting casting each month and it works out a lot cheaper. However there are still lulls when we can go weeks without seeing anything that takes our fancy. DD has had lots of work through Star Now, some paid, some not, then there has been the occasional follow up paid work from initial unpaid casting either with the same director/company or they have passed details on or they watched a showereel created from a star now casting - for us it has definately been worth it.

Hi,

to have a full account with starnow - worked well for us. First we had a profile for my dh as he was doing some work as his hobby, then I changed his profile into my dd's. We have a fantastic photo book/portfolio done in a matter of few month and all the photographers came thru starnow. To do a portfolio costs enormous amount of money, especially if you want a very high quality pics. We paid nothing - and that only, has paid out the annual fees I pay to starnow!

Hope it helps

I hope you have great success!

You probably already know this, but perhaps it's worth stating for anyone new to Starnow:

There does not appear to be any moderation/checking of any advertisements/castings that appear on Starnow. (All that is required to put information about jobs on Starnow is an email address). There may be many interesting and genuine opportunites that appear there and I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from joining, but it is always best to tread warily and to try to find as much as you can about the company if/when they express an interest in your application/submission.

There have been some dodgy companies posting on it in the past and there will always be some companies/individuals (not only on Starnow, all over the place!) who try to make their set-up sound more high profile/significant than it is.

It is also quite possible that some castings appear on sites like Starnow without the knowledge/permission of the Casting Director or production company. There have been quite a few examples of agencies casting around for the right sort of client to submit for jobs who have dangled the carrot of high profile films and made it looks as though they are involved in the casting in some way. Agents don't cast TV and Film. If you see a casting for a high profile film or TV show on Starnow, I would suggest treating it with a degree of cynicism - it's very unlikely to have come from the the people doing the casting -unless it's an open audition (in which case the information is likely to be available free of charge somewhere!).

If you don't pay, can you not apply for auditions?

You do have to pay to apply for things via Starnow.

Mandy.com is free though and Screen Terrier often has useful information too.

There is a new facility on Star Now that allows some opportunities to be applied for 'free'. I imagine that the person placing the casting call has to cover a cost instead.
