Song for audition.

Post by xdancerx4xlifex »

Ok, so i have another audition for dance college (performers, urdang) and was wondering does it matter what song i actually sing as long as its from a musical and relates to my gender? I was thinking of Cabaret, life is a cabaret but my friend sang a cabaret song last year and didn't get in anywhere.

Do dance colleges hate certain musicals or does it really depend on your talent and acting?

It depends on your talent and what the particular college/drama school wants and what they see in you. I don't think you can assume that your friend's choice of song was the reason she didn't get in - though Cabaret probably is on the "overdone" list.

A musical theatre song (rather than pop or rock) is definitely a good choice because it gives you an acting journey. You need to sing something that suits your voice and your personality and ideally something they won't have heard 30 times that day.

I expect that there will be panel members who groan inwardly (hopefully inwardly :D ) at some choices that people make, but I have heard of people gaining places who have sung very "overdone" choices, so if you really, really love something and know that you can bring something special to it then fair enough. There are good reasons why so many songs are "overdone" - so many of them are such wonderful songs! I'd be inclined to try to find a couple alternatives as well though - and perhaps really look for something new and different that you can learn to love and make your own.

dh does not sit on audition panels themsleves his colleagues do and often they prefer to hear a well known song rather than a completely unknown one as they end up judging the song rather than the singer.

A song that shows an acting journey is a good choice. The college dh works in is predominantly known for dance but they need you to show you can sing in tune and can act/perform a song. They can work on technique once you get there.
