Looking for castings before agent signs you

Post by JTBmum »

Hi,

Dd is in final year at Musical Theatre School. Has had interest from a few agents. She is very interested in one, who have indicated they would like to take her on, but haven't committed and have said they will come to her next show where she has a major part, but this isn't going to be until March. In the meantime I am sure there are castings going on for musicals and other things, for work from the summer onwards. Whats the best way to find castings in her situation? She went to a casting yesterday after sending her cv to CD.

Hi there

Great news that your dd has agents interested -it's such a competitive environment and this is so positive for her!

I would think that it is rather early to be looking for work for next summer. Was the job she went for recently that far in advance? Would the school allow her/encourage her to be looking for work now? I know that the school I went to and the one my ds went to would want to vet any applications for work while still a student and it would only be an exceptional opportunity which would be considered worth leaving college early for. Getting a good job during the final year does happen of course (and wonderful for the students when it does) but it can be very disruptive to the plans for final year shows (and thus can be annoying/tough for the other students in the shows).

I think I'd advise that she should talk it through with her tutors.

Writing to CDs is a great idea and if she can interest them in coming to see her shows too then that is very positive. Most information about castings is still likely to be via agents though.

Hi JTBmum I hope I can help a little. Firstly congrats to your DD for gaining so much interest! I graduated from a college in Cambridge in July and being so far away from London agents had little interest in coming to see our shows so the majority graduated without representation.
Before leaving college I joined Spotlight which allows me to apply for the breakdowns they post without an agent. Friends of mine have joined Dance Cast (http://www.dancecastuk.com) which list castings ranging from commercials to casinos. There are a small number of open calls for musicals which are usually printed in The Stage newspaper but the majority are closed calls requiring an agent. Otherwise I think your DD is doing the right thing by sending her CV off to casting directors, after all it's not what you know it's who you know!
