licences. Health

Post by rainbowLM »

Hi I'm new to this forum, my dd has just finished her first panto and had so much fun she'd love to do more shows. She has asthma will this cause a problem for licences? as I know they sometimes ask for a doctor's letter. (her asthma is controlled)
I'm so new to this I'm trying to read up as much as possible to avoid any hurt before she even starts.
This is a great website and I have found so much information already!

Controlled asthma isn't a problem at all. I have dancers who have it - and the only problem is them being scatty enough to forget where they put their inhalers! Asthma also doesn't seem to be an additional problem with smoke and haze that we use all the time, or pyrotechnics.

I suspect nowadays that if anyone even thought of suggesting it would be an issue - the medical fraternity would just laugh.

There are a few people who have it sufficiently badly that normal activity is impossible - these folk wouldn't even consider what we do. Go for it!

My ds is midway through his second panto season as one of the main child parts and he has also done some tv work. He has chronic brittle asthma. My GP letter states that he is an asthmatic on regular medications and under the care of specialist Consultants. It also states that mum or a licensed chaperone should be available on set at all times to administer any medications if he requires it. This has never caused a problem with any licences being issued. I can only add that performing on stage is when he feels truly alive and happy and that singing, dancing and acting are great ways to strengthen the lungs.

That's fantastic news, well done to your son for doing so well and not letting the horrible asthma get in the way. So lovely to hear a positive story. Thank you!

My DS has asthma and has never had any problems with getting a licence, he has also had more severe health problems and has still never had any problems getting a licence. During a run of RB Nutcracker he had a severe attack and this didn't stop him continuing once recovered or being chosen to perform in other performances. Most productions have a cover system in operation in case a child is taken ill in one way or another (seen that in operation when DS taken ill at side of stage). DS is now in 2nd year sixth form still with asthma but not stopping him doing what he wants to do.
