Touring Company

Post by WrockDee »

Hi everyone!

I'm nearly at the end of my first year at university and I've just been offered the chance to go on tour with a TIE company with a play during the summer! It'll around my county and then at the Edinburgh Fringe. It's not paid, but travel and accommodation will be covered and a daily subsistence allowance provided.

Do you think I should do it?

I think to be honest, that it depends on what you will be doing. If you treat it like an amateur production, you have some fun, and can afford to do it - then sure, why not. If, on the other hand, some other people are being paid, or maybe they are taking you because you're cheap, not because they really need you - I'd not want to be involved. I did, many years ago, a summer Shakespeare tour, and they fed me. As it happened, I learnt lots and decided I absolutely hate Shakespeare - so in a way, it did me good. However - my son got offered a similar tour as an ASM, and we discovered the original paid Stage Manager had walked, and they fiddled the job to suddenly be an 'opportunity' - when in fact he was a dogsbody, working for free with others on a profit share (which in the end didn't matter, because it lost money!)

Do a bit of investigation, and if you fancy it and can afford it - do it!
