The Juilliard school, new York !

Post by Misspatricia »

Hi everyone :)
My DD is 17 years old and currently attends a full time peforming arts school in London and is hoping next year to audition for the Juliard school in America for drama! I was wondering if anyone has any information or experiences with the Juliard audition process ? Do applicants from the UK have the same audition process as applicants from the US ? Also we won't be able to meet the full costs for the school (: Does anyone know if Juliard do full scholarships ? If so do you know how many , do they offer many to auditionees from the UK ?

If anyone's DD's or DS's have auditioned to Juliard before or planning too , or just have any information on what the auditions are like that would be really helpful ! :)

Thank you :) Xxxx

I'm sorry I don't have any useful information. Is there a particular reason why your daughter is aiming to study in the US? I know the school is very well regarded, but I'm curious about the decision to apply there rather than the UK schools.

There is quite a lot of helpful/detailed information about the auditions at the end of this page: http://www.juilliard.edu/apply/program- ... /index.php

There's also a helpful financial aid calculator (you may have already seen it) http://www.juilliard.edu/apply/financia ... ulator.php

The blog http://blog.juilliard.edu/ has lots of information from students and some from staff. It makes interesting reading!

it looks as though the audition process for US and UK students is exactly the same except that UK students can send/upload a pre-screening video rather than travelling to the US (which is similar to what a number of UK drama schools do for non-UK students). If selected after this pre-screening, the UK applicant then joins in the process like other US applicants.

I think it is a fortune but am not sure about funding. There are a number of other places such as NYU Tisch, Yale and University of San Diego that are very good.

Hi, DD intends to audition for London drama schools to like Rada, Rose brudford, Central, etc .... She knows these are just as good but I think everyone always has their favourites and I know it's Juliard that she's being talking about for the past four years ! Although I understand what you mean, both me and my daughter hope to be able to book to go to America to view the school properly first , that's one thing we both agree on - that until she's seen it for herself properly she don't know - it could end up not being for her ! Xx

Oh and thankyou for the links and information on the screening auditions :)

@JTBmum .... I know , it's a lot of money !! We have heard of tisch and have looked in to it to , I know my DD also has it in mind , thankyou for the other schools information :)

I do think it's worth asking lots of questions about work after graduating. It is generally very hard indeed for a UK actor to be able to work in the States (if they don't already have a reasonably high profile). Not impossible, but difficult and costly - you would definitely need to ask lots of questions about the difficulty of obtaining visas etc. If she's intending to come back here to look for work, I'm not sure how straightforward it will be for her to secure agency representation over here if she has attended a US college - that's not to say it won't be highly regarded, because of course it will, I know it has an excellent reputation, but I don't know how many UK agents go to Julliard to see students. It would be worth finding this out. Of course, lots of graduates from UK schools don't get representation straight from drama school, but at least they get seen!

We were thinking the same thing. She has had an agent before and did some work - but nothing major therefore yes it's going to be really difficult to start of in the US after training as her CV isnt particular built up. She does want to work in the US after drama school, well we will just take things how they are and see what happens :)

That sounds very wise :)

Best of luck to your daughter, wherever she ends up studying, and do let us know what you find out about Julliard - I'd love to hear more about it.

Juilliard is the school that Ryan and Sharpay wanted to go to in High School Musical 3. Ain't nostalgia fun?

..and I was watching a programme last night on Sky Arts, which is a fly on the wall about dancers at Julliard - what a coincidence! I think it's a series, which although primarily about dance might give a bit of insight into the school.

Hello @luck n fate :)
Thank you for the wonderful information and experiences !! Was really interesting to hear your story. Much congratulations on your daughters scholarship ! That's brilliant. My DD is always continuously changing her mind on what she wants to do, she now is quite against the drama schools here - she's studying theatre now and is finding the work about stage and theatre ( I really really don't want to say boring because me and daughter know it's important to know all types of acting but her interest is dropping) - she really wants to learn more tv and screen acting , improv and workshop types but they don't want to train them in that at my daughters school - she thinks uk drama schools are going to be the same when she read their course description ! So the US drama schools ( like new your film academy and NYU tisch have really caught her eye) - they do teach screen acting!

She is a bit - well actually a lot nervous about Juliard - she's so young , she really don't think she stands a chance ! And yes, it's really expensive - we have family in Boston but that's not exactly new York !

12 people on a panel ???? ! Wow! Haha - I can tell my DD is so confused of what to do ! DD always has a try for most things but we will just she what happens from September. She's now thinking of not going to drama school at all for a while and just getting some life experience :)

Thank you one again for everything ! Good luck to your DD too with her dancing .

It's really interesting to read about your daughter's view about screen acting at British drama schools. I think she's probably right in some ways, though I think the British drama schools are beginning to catch up.

We didn't have much opportunity to practise screen acting (OSD) and I think it was a bit limited at RADA too, though both schools do some of it (as do the others). I'm not sure that the actor training needs to be different though - in fact, I'm not sure it necessarily is very different, though it may have some different emphases. Many British schools follow their own version of the approach taken by Uta Hagen, for example - as well as looking at other approaches. I think the British schools definitely concentrate on enabling actors to give truthful performances - which are the ones that read well on screen - just as the US does. Where I think they are sometimes lacking is in giving the opportunity to practise some of the more mechanical/technical aspects of screen acting (hitting your mark, "talk fast, move slow", adjusting your performance according to size of shot, continuity, vocal levels, when you can overlap or interrupt dialogue etc) which I personally think would be really useful before finding yourself on the set of a busy soap opera with no-one to advise you and no rehearsal! Those things are not really to do with how you act though...

I don't think she's right about improvisation - I think plenty of that goes on at British drama schools. I'm not sure about workshops, because that covers such a broad range of things - you could do a workshop in any style of acting at all.

I know it's a bit simplistic to say it, but I don't think "studying" theatre is what happens at drama school (unlike Theatre Studies or a Drama degree), drama schools are (or should be) about doing it, not studying it.

Perhaps she should look at Arts Ed, their BA acting course is a 3 year Acting for Film & Television one and concentrates more heavily on film and TV.

I think the course at ALRA has a lot of screen training in it.
