Scholarship Audition
My DS has a scholarship audition for the theatre arts course at Tring in March. If he doesn't get a big scholarship he can't go :-( Does anyone have any tips or past experience of these please?
Many thanks

Re: Scholarship Audition
yes we have...
no scholarship here either, although he was first reserve but no one dropped out lol
there is a Q and A with the principle and heads of department,
solo singing
a group class of dance - based on modern, it was a class where they were pushed quite hard.
monologue, - I can't remember if it was one or two, pretty certain DS did a modern piece and Shakespeare
The solo was supposed to be accompanied by a pianist and you need to provide sheet music, however one girl with DS had a backing track ob CD and was allowed to use it, shame I never got to ask as DS far more comfortable with a backing track
The whole thing is very friendly and relaxed, and enjoyable for the kids.
I will say the majority of the kids there, were JA's of Tring already, wearing the uniform and known to Tring.
There is a shortage of accommodation so even if you got a place there is no guarantee of a boarding place....
It is an absolute dream of mine and DS to go there, if we win the lottery, that's where he will be
good luck

Re: Scholarship Audition
Thank you Riverdancefan, that is really really helpful
Do they have to do any more exams? Was it year 7 or 9 that your DS was going for?
My DS is going for year 9.
Same here re lottery, in fact I never used to buy a lottery ticket until recently.
DS is not a JA of Tring either. He has been offered a paying boarding place and I wish we could just have accepted it
There was a girl at the auditions who did not get a scholarship last year so was trying again, so that is obviously an option.
Good luck to your DS in everything he does xxx

Re: Scholarship Audition
and yours too
you just have to try don't you, and you just never know.....
to be offered a place and not be able to afford it it the pits !
This year we are having a break from it all, he got to the final 15 for Sylvia Youngs (don't get me started on that ! lol ...)but a massive achievement as he was the only one who had never been a performer in the West -end ,(too tall) and unknown to the judging panel.
offered a scholarship to Italia Conti but just not quite enough money
and a place at Tring but no money
but he just gets on with the disappointment, more so than I do funny enough!
He will feel really comfortable at Tring, they are a lovely bunch !!
break a leg !!

Yep, you are right, you do just have to try
I am sorry it has not worked out for your DS, I'm sure it will and of course everyone says that not going to performing arts schools does not ultimately affect anything. My DS has had dance and drama offers from another school but the travelling is an issue for us. If he does not get the Tring scholarship we do have something to fall back on, not performing arts but still a bit 'different' and an amazing school.
Good luck to your talented DS xxx

Re: Scholarship Audition
Not yet no
I thought they might call but that just appears to be the MDS ballet children. They said 1-3 weeks apparently (according to T who's not always a reliable source) The other source would be my DH and he's even less reliable.
Anyway, all behind us now, nothing we can do, stopped stressing about it.
Big week at school this week with school production so handy distraction!
Thank you for asking
