Casting query: am clueless!

Post by Sunshine1973 »

Hi there

Am hoping for some friendly advice as we are very new to all this.

DS had his first casting last week for a film. He was in an out very quickly (less than 10 mins), but after some digging on my part is transpires that in addition to the lines he'd been asked to learn, he was also asked to run through a couple of other short scenes from the film with the CD.

Is this the norm? Or should I take it as a good sign that they wanted to see something more than just the lines.

Is the process now that the CD sends film from all the castings to the director, who then decides who he wants to see. Or does she only send the ones she thinks are any good?

I know I should try and stop thinking about it, but can't! Stupid really.
Thanks, in advance.

Hello!

It is completely normal to try to analyse what went on in an audition/casting and then to try to work out what your chances are. However... that way madness lies!

The only way to tackle it is to do the audition and then try to think about something else and if you get a recall (or the job) count it as a pleasant surprise.

What you have described sounds pretty normal - that doesn't mean it's not a hopeful sign, but it doesn't really mean it is a hopeful sign either ](*,) . The short amount of time he was there is no indicator either - not for a first round audition. The CD may well send a selection of "the best" (or the most suitable) to the director, but it depends what they have agreed between them really - depending on numbers, some directors may view all the auditions.

Welcome to the frustrating and unfathomable world of auditions!

Thanks for that. It's what I suspected but good to have it confirmed by an expert!

Will try to stop thinking about it now. Easier said than done!! :D

Sunshine,

I'd like to also add, that your child can go for an amazing opportunity, not get it (even when the child thinks it was their best ever audition so far), feel a bit despondent and start wondering if all the the back and forth to auditions is worth it, then when you least expect it another amazing opportunity presents itself and you wonder why on earth you felt despondent. So welcome to the ups and downs of castings. Expect to only get a job now and then (or nothing for ages then three in short succession!). There are so many children available for very few roles, but someone has to get the job.

right, will remember that. Waiting not my strong point and now my youngest is at school I have more time to dwell and look at sites like these! I also feel slightly guilty as we arrived at casting in the nick of time, panting from a run from tube station, so poor Ds had to go in a bit flustered, and no time for final run through lines.

To be honest Sunshine1973, I have found that the waiting does get a little easier as you get used to it. My dd and I now tend to try and look at each audition as more experience gained and afterwards try to think nothing more of it and expect nothing too so on those occasions when that call comes through to say she's got the job it's all smiles and celebrations. :D

Good luck to your DS though. If he just goes out and enjoys the whole experience he'll hopefully love it and will make lots of new friends along the way :D
