NYT Auditions

Post by Livy2 »

Hello,

Has anyone else auditioned for NYT before and could they tell me a bit about it. I've looked at their website but can't see the
Audition dates or Dates of when the production would be?

Thanks :)

DD auditioned for the NYT a few years ago. The auditions were workshop based in the morning with an individual time slot for your monologue in the afternoon. If you get in you have to attend a residential course (I think two weeks which you have to pay before) before you are able to audition for parts in productions.

You might find more info here: http://www.ideastap.com/Partners/nationalyouththeatre

Good luck!

My DD got in last year and did the new members course. She had an incredible time and can't wait to do it all again next year. PM me if you have any questions..

DS has an audition this year - first time and quite young so probably a long shot but he is very keen to have a go. If he was successful he would need to stay over as we are not in reasonable daily commute - has anyone any experience of what its like for under 16s that stay over in NYT accommodation e.g. do they share, what happens about eating, does the course run through the weekend or do they come home? Not that I'm anxious at all ....... 8-[

My DD was 14 1/2 when she went on the course last year - and she had a blast but it was a bit of a baptism of fire for us (as she's our youngest). They live in halls of residence, cook for themselves and are expected to get themselves to and from the workshop venue, which was a 20 minute public transport journey away. Sounded terrifying, but in actual fact, she shared her flat with 3 seventeen year olds, who were lovely and took her under their wing for the first few days until she found her feet. She managed perfectly well (only got off the train in the wrong spot once!) and now I have to keep her tethered to me to stop her from going off at every opportunity!! She now goes down to London herself on the train, and in a couple of weeks is flying over to Ireland to visit one of her friends from NYT.

So in summary, scary and daunting, but they're a LOT more capable than we perhaps give them credit for, and your DS will have the time of his life if he gets in!

Thanks for that - agree it probably feels more daunting for us than him and becoming a bit more independent would, if I'm honest, do him the world of good. The transport I think he'd be fine with but I would love to be a fly on the wall with the cooking!! Oven chips every day I would guess!! Sounds like a fantastic all round experience even if I am biting my finger nails for a fortnight!! He's really looking forward to the audition anyway and so we shall see how it goes!

Thanks again!!!

They only have access to a microwave for cooking (because there are under 16s, the cookers themselves are disconnected for health and safety) so it was lots of ready-meals from M&S and dried "pasta and sauce" type packets.

But they are generally within easy access of either shops or fast-food places as well, so "cooking" isn't essential. Honestly, he'll love it, and as I think they try to keep the balance of boys and girls pretty even (and a lot less boys apply), boys definitely have a better chance of getting in ;)
