Hi

This is a good resource:http://www.dialectsarchive.com/

Yorkshire is indeed Northern!

In my experience it tends to be those who live in the area or know people from an area that can tell the difference within regions. Otherwise most people recognise a much more generalised widely based regional accent (like "North East", "General Northern" "West Country"). I quite often see "Northern" as a request for accents on breakdowns but the variety of accents north of Birmingham (or any other arbitrary geographical line) is huge. ... and I have known CDs who regard Birmingham as "North"
