Knowing nothing about how things are with ucas these days ( we had ucca & pcas). An ex student has made some poor choices only applying for one Lipa through ucas back in the autumn. I had recto ended applying for Arden & others but she hasn't realised they were through ucas.

Can she apply once she hears from lipa?

If you are not holding any offers you can apply for more through UCAS Extra

I think you can only apply for one course at a time through UCAS Extra though ...

Yes - here is how it works:

"But what happens if you applied to five universities but you have been unsuccessful in gaining a place? This is where UCAS Extra helps.

What is UCAS Extra?

UCAS Extra is an opportunity for students who have already applied for courses via UCAS but have not yet been offered a place. Or maybe you have changed your mind and you would like to turn down all of your current offers and apply for a new course.

How do I apply via UCAS Extra?

On the UCAS website, where you can also see which courses still have available places before you apply.

When can I apply for UCAS Extra?

UCAS Extra applications can be sent from the middle of February to the end of June.

How many courses can I apply for through UCAS Extra?

One at a time. Once you have applied for a course you will need to wait for an answer from your original choice or wait for 21 days before you can apply for a different course.

What should I consider when applying?
•Take your time. Although some courses will fill up fast, it is important you choose the right course and don’t rush your application.
•Do your research. Extra work now will save you heartache later so be sure to make sure the course you apply for has space.
•Email or phone the university first. Make sure you are eligible for your course by contacting the admissions office or international office at your chosen university.
•Think about why you may not have been successful with your original applications. Did you meet the grade requirements? Does thecourse match your skills and qualifications?

DD hasnt heard yet. Did your dds friend get a recall?[/quote]

No she didn't I'm afraid and neither has my dd. She received her e mail from ucas this evening informing her that she has been unsuccessful. Oh well. Not a surprise really. At least it's all experience.

Oh shame. DD still not heard . Will let you know when she does. She thought she sang well but who knows with only 3 minutes or so to impress. I think she will be disappointed if she doesnt get a recall as her singing is very good and her best strength I think. A no would however at least allow her to see if anything else is available at say Chichester or decide to wait and have a gap year rather than prolong the agony of a recall and then another possible no. I would of course be delighted if she got an offer as GSA was one of her favourite courses, They are probably still working there way through the ones they saw on Friday and she will probably hear tomorrow. It must be a mammoth task with the number that apply. i think she said they were seeing about 250 in Manchester so the admin staff are still probably sending info through to UCAS. Anyway at least your dd has a firm offer on what I think looks a fabulous course at Chichester and I can see Chichester being one of the top and sought after places in the very near future if not already. I think it has only been going a few years unlike some of the more established places but she will definitely apply there next year if nothing doing this year. If your dd accepts Chichester you must let us know how she gets on next year

Yes I will keep you informed if she goes there. Good luck to your dd with her recall. You know what they say. No news is good news.

Dorothy

She just has her audition at manchester Arden now next month. She has decided not go to her mountview audition. We didn't realise the costs involved in sending her there if she was successful amongst other things.

Yes the goverment only give student loans for part of the fees I think at Mountview so you have to fund quite a bit of it yourselves so that was why dd didnt apply there this year. Good luck with Ardern for your dd. My dd didnt apply there as she ran out of choices but knows a couple of people who have got in there. You wonder how many places have already gone dont you when they audition? I think if nothing is happening this year dd will apply really early everywhere for 2014 as she will have her UCAS points so hopefully if she gets any offers they will be unconditional.

Yes you only get £6000 loan and you have to pay the extra £6000 yourself, gulp! plus the living costs which would be way higher than the allowence given. I'm beginning to think that to succeed in this business you have to be super rich or on a low income. Nothing inbetween. ](*,)

I agree with you Showtunes up to a point. Dd's friend who is on a low income can only apply for 1 school (6th form) due to audition costs, travel, overnight accommodation, maintenance costs which even with help are not enough. If she got into this school she has relatives close by so she wouldn't have to pay maintenance. So the only people who are able to audition are the super rich - kind of defeats the purpose of changing to means tested DaDAs, doesn't it!

My dd has done 4 auditions so far. By the end of her auditions I totted up that I won't have much change out of £500. That's for the audition fees, hotels( only travelodge though mind) trains, car parking fees, diesel, tube tickets etc.Its an expensive job. The university courses for musical theatre are obtainable due to being covered by student UK finance and to some aspect the living fees are manageable as everybody will be able to loan at least £3500. We still have to put towards that but its nothing like it would be living in london and going somewhere like mountivew and finding somewhere to live there.

My dds been quite lucky in terms of cost although we have still paid out probably about £250 in audition fees and travel. She has a good circle of friends she has met through YMT and youth threatre, auditions, stage experience etc over the years and so has managed to stay overnight with friends for one of her London auditions and Glasgow audition, she got a lift with her friend for the other London audition travelling overnight and she got a voucher for a free audition at Central through her college. The other auditions were in Liverpool so no travel cost and Manchester for which the train fare was quite cheap. She also applied to her college and got some financial help off them towards the cost of auditions. Having said all that she still has no offers although she is still waitng on GSA and if she gets a recall the travel down there will probably be about £50 and she might need a travelodge so that would bump up the cost. Wiithout any offers its dead money although she now knows what to expect and its been good experience but we will have to go through it all again next year without any help she has had from college this year. It is very expensive and I agree it does sometimes seem that you have to be really low income to get the full grants or dadas or preferably be wealthy in order not to worry about the cost. Regretably a lot us arent wealthy and have to do without holidays and things to try and help our kids do what they love. I havent had a holiday for about 5 years (other than a few days away in london once or twice a year to see some shows) I am certainly not well paid. i am the only breadwinner in the family and am only doing 4 days because of the recession so money is really tight and although dd might get a grant it wouldnt be a full one so I would still need to try and help a bit and I really have nothing much to spare. Its not even a well paid profession unless you are famous so you will probably never earn enough to repay all the student loans . What a crazy world we live in.
