I agree, there are other routes, and the direct, 3 year degree route has no guarantees at all

By that do you mean the drama school route has no guarantee?

I just did a long reply to your post showtunes and thought i had submitted it but it hasnt posted so cant be bothered to write it all out again. Its all very confusing with what is accredited and non accredited, what degrees you can get full funding and what you cant, why are some fully funded and others not eg Mountview, why some vocational courses are a year and some are two years but are thought of as better than 3 years training, why some you apply through UCAS and others you dont. Its a tough business and no guarantees of work wherever you go although I appreciate that agents are likely to go with the accredited ones but MT is also a short career especially I think for females, as the ensembles are usually young and fit and there are not loads of main parts and work is sporadic and not guaranteed. I think the main thing is showtunes is that your dd does something that she loves for the next 3 years. but if she wants to try again next year to get into one of the accredited courses would it be possible to defer her place for a year so at least she would know she had a place to go to . At least for my dd she wants to do a degree so can do other things with it if it doesnt work out and it has to be something she can get a student loan for unless i win the lottery :)

totally totally agree they should do what makes them happy and enjoy opening any doors that open for them - dd choose the course that she felt suited her best she followed her heart... no matter which we our kids go even the non performing children will probably re train a number of times during their lifetimes its the way of the world today -
If you dont buy a ticket how can you ever expect to win !!

Mountview are very generous with offering places to many who apply - probably due to lack of funding for their courses. It is a confusing system with accredited nonaccredited courses/some via UCAS with student loans, but http://www.dramauk.co.uk/ is a fantastic source of information -

yes, ...because there's no guarantee that students will get a good agent will sign them at the end of their course, or that they'll secure jobs afterwards - it's like any graduates really, but the arts is tough generally. Theatre does not pay very well either, so it's tough.
As long as they're happy in the choices they make, nothings the end of the world - there's always other options.

Urdang is opposite Sadlers Wells and you are likely to be nearer if you stay in Kings Cross/ Old Street area
There is a nice travelodge just outside KC station, I have stayed there before, and one at Old St I think.... Check on the website

Yes dd got a recall for gsa so is delighted and says she is going to work really hard for it as its her last one probably for this year. Its a bit different than the others as she has to learn another song from a list they give you, compose a dance and needs another contemporary monologue so lots to do in a couple of weeks. Really hope it works out for her.Did your DD go to Arden or is that this week

Well done to your dd Dorothy, that's great news :D

Ds waiting on Manchester Met, they said 10-15 days, so only on day 10. Dorothy, do you know if any of your dd's friends from college have heard? Think you said they went the day before ds.

Good luck to everyone with their auditions.

It took ages for DD to hear from Man Met last year ... she ended up ringing them up in case they had forgotten her which seemed to speed the process up!

Thanks everyone for the good wishes for dd. I guess what wiil be will be but I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed for her and if she gets a place she deserves it as she works so hard and just wants to continue doing what she loves (as I am sure all the people on here's children do) . GSA was in her top 3 places she would like to go to before they all started (Central and RCS were the others which were unsuccessful although she got afternoon recalls at both and loved both places). At least she will have a bit of time there to show what she can do, so other than the first round audition which was short but was luckily in Manchester so not too far to travel, all her auditions have at least given her a chance to show what she can do and so so have been a good learning experience if she has to do it all again next year.

Re Man Met nigelben none of her friends have heard yet . If I hear they have I will let you know but I am sure it wont be too long. The waiting is a killer isnt it? I think the longer you wait the better the news. DD only heard from GSA yesterday. Good luck to your dd next week Showtunes and anyone elses kids still to audition.
