How Many Auditions Should You have Per Month?

Post by notanaveragejoe »

Hi, I'm seventeen years old and represented by Byron's Management and I've only had Three Auditions this Year (2 in January & 1in April) and was wondering how many auditions should a 17yr old get per month. (p,s it were all commercials)

I think it really depends on what's about and whether you fit the bill or not. I don't think that 3 auditions since the start of the year sounds bad.

Some people get one or two auditions a year, so your situation is not bad :)

It all depends As Catkat_0 said, on if you fit the part, the brief of the job and your application will also be competing with many others. Sometimes its a slow period for agents, as they try and search for work.

Just hang in there as you never know if a suitable job comes up! :) your situation is normal xx

Thanks for that. I hear some Actors get 1 audition per week but I guess they appeared right for the part.

I'm not sure where you have heard that, it's not a very useful statistic really anyway (and in my experience it's not accurate - it just doesn't work like that) but you have hit the nail on the head with the second sentence.

"Appearing right for the part" is not just about looks either (as I'm sure you know), except in the case of commercials/photoshoots. For other work (film/tv/stage/corporate) - it will be to do with experience, who you have worked with before, what your skillset is and whether the CD has been impressed with previous auditions.

Commercials are a complete lottery. Some people are called in for loads of them. Some excellent actors scarcely ever get called in for commercials - this is a lot to do with looks and what is in fashion. It can also depend on whether your agent submits you for anything and everything or whether they are more particular about only submitting you for properly paid work (some commercials are advertised at ridiculously low pay).

I would suggest that you have a chat to your agent and ask them about what you can do to improve your chances of being called in and talking about your medium to long term career prospects - as long as you approach this realistically and proactively your agent should be willing to talk things over and might give you some reassurance and some useful pointers. In other words, try looking at it from the point of view of "what can I do, as an actor, to improve my employability?" rather than "why are you not doing more as an agent?". Most agents work hard for their clients - because if they don't, they don't earn anything! At 17 you are likely to be competing with some quite experienced young-looking actors (especially for theatre). Are you still in full-time education? This will very definitely have an influence on what you get seen for in theatre. Do you have a showreel? This could improve your chances of getting called in. Are you thinking of continuing to act as an adult performer? In which case, are you considering some post-18 training?
