Hi everyone. Has anyone heard anything about SLP College in Leeds? I've never heard of it before but would really appreciate if anyone who has had experience of auditioning there, or even know someone who goes there?
Another question, I know of the colleges out there and have researched them (most) but wonder if anyone with experience could make some suggestions on college choice to audition next year please? My daughter, 18, is very determined (and pationate) about her choice of training for musical theatre, has been offered a place at Urdang but will turn it down due to funding. Another offer of 'foundation' at Cambridge, will turn it down as I can't fund it. Only other place she auditioned was GSA, and didn't go through to afternoon rounds, was gutted as she thought she did good and the dance teacher was really praising her during the audition. She is at least being noticed, which is really encouraging (for us both, it is such a huge committment and sacrafice and cost). She has an audition at Performers in May, but it won't be for a funded place as we missed the deadline for submitting an application, so she will go just for experience, but couldn't afford to go if she was offered anything
Next year she'll apply for more places and my question is this. Her main strength is singing (she is about to do grade 8 Lamda, she started ballet three years ago, is grade 5 but hasn't been doing grades for almost two years, she loves the evening ballet classes she now goes to. Last year she tried at 5 colleges, Urdange (got offer), Performers (offered foundation), GSA, Mountview, & Arts Ed. She said they all really seemed dance based, and also I think in hindsite she wasn't ready, mentally or dance ability wise. I don't know anyone else and have read all 28 pages of this thread, hungry for guidance and information - thank you to everyone who have given your experience and advise so freely!
This year she took a gap year to work full time and then take as many dance classes as she could do, which worked for 4 months. This didn't go to plan as her employers were not flexible in giving her more daytime work hours, so she couldn't get to dance classes. She's has moved jobs due to this, and will now be able to do as many evening dance classes as she can fit it, and fund them too, which will help me save for whatever comes next year. Hurrah. It seems that (in her experience last year) that the girls she spoked do at auditions and open days had their main focus in dance, will this lessen her chances of success? In fact at Cambridge this year, I got that clear impression, when the principle said the students often find their voices in their second and third years. I'm wondering if the same is true for dance, if she isn't as strong as some of the others?
And finally, how much attitional theatre experience should she be getting 'outside' of work and dance, singing classes, i.e. taking part in shows, amateur theatre, etc, as there isn't alot of time left over for her. Does this increase their chances of being offered places? (her experience isn't as vast as most, i would guess)
We are going to try and see more west-end shows and local ones too. I believe in her, I think she has what it takes, but it is such a worry, MT is something that is so competitive (and expensive). But, I'll do whatever I can to help her achieve this-I believe she can and am so thrilled for all of you who have been posting of your DaDa successes. Well done to you and your children!!
Sorry for a long post, so many questions, so many fears xx Any suggestions would be appreciated.
