How Much Is Student Accommodation?

Post by Pearl »

Could any of you with dc's at colleges already give me some idea of how much you pay for their accommodation.

Easy to find out how much fees are but not living costs! Thanks
Bring it on!!!

Oh how long is a piece of string ! :D Depends on where your child is going. My Dd is at GSA so first year gets access to surrey uni halls residence. Depending on room type 85-120 a week.

She is off to Mountview next year. Only private accommodation but having researched its around 150 a week for a flat share (plus bills of course) Check out private Halls of residence providers. There are some in most big cities and they do work out cheaper as the let period is often 35-45 weeks rather than a full 12 months with private lets. Please any one else who has anything to add please post it

I gree with the piece of string answer. My DD has been in London for last 3 years and pays £440 a month basic rent. There are bills on top of that - electric, gas, tv license, internet etc. There were a few places in Uni accommodation available but they were a LONG way away. Very few drama colleges have much in the way of dedicated student housing (unlike universities) :(

DS at Arts Ed and pays £470 per month (£5640 per year) which, although is meant to include utility bills, there is always around £150 at the end of the year more to pay. He gets the maintenance loan which is £4988 per year so there is quite a shortfall which we have to find. There is no student accommodation (think this is true of most of the London colleges) so the rents are annual as opposed to the university digs which are termly. There is also the deposit required to secure accommodation. DS paid £600 which he had to put down in the July before the September start date. Of course, this is only our personal experience and as everybody has said previously, it really is a case of "how long is a piece of string".
All new to me!

DD paid about £5200 for a room in a shared flat in student halls this year ... that included everything but the standard of accommodation was very basic. It really does depend where you are and what you are looking for. For most students though the cost of accommodation will be more than they actually get as a maintenance loan!
