Any info on applying to NYMT for musician place?
Just wondering if anyone on here has experience of applying for/being a musician for an NYMT production? Ds is taking his GCSEs next summer and doesn't want to audition for a stage performer place. But he wondered whether he could try for a musician place as we assume the commitment over the Easter holidays if he got in would be a lot less. Does anyone know?
He is grade 7 standard on the clarinet and plays in an orchestra and swing band and he was first clarinet playing for a school production of Oliver. Wondering if that is the sort of standard they look for, or is it college music students - older and more experienced/advanced?

My DS was in Whistle this year. They didn't have the musicians with them over Easter - though I don't know whether they rehearsed separately. You email them on enquiries@nymt.org.uk to ask. I've found them to be very helpful about answering questions. Of course, someone on here might be able to speak from experience.

I think the band were with DS for The Other School over Easter, but I don't know how long they stayed for..
drop them an email, the musicians have a fantastic cameraderie, fabulous bunch, and I think he has more than enough experience to go for it. They get to work with some super musical arrangers etc..
There is good bursary support available for musicians..

Thanks TalyaB and riverdancefan. That's very helpful. It sounds like it might be a possibility for ds. We'll wait now and see what instruments they are looking for nearer the time. I don't suppose you could give some idea of the average ages of the musicians?

I think about 16-18 is average, although there was a 12 year old cellist who was amazing in WSS!
It's a good range usually

Thanks riverdancefan. That's great. Really I just wanted to know that they weren't all heading off to the pub every night, leaving any younger players feeling left out of the group

Hi Winter. I don't know anything about the actor musician roles, but the website says they need a flute for The Ragged Child, (which is the only one that needs clarinets, so the one my ds will audition for). The website says that if you want to be considered for an actor musician role then apply for the actor auditions but complete the music section on the Actor application form as well. Hopefully it will make sense as you work through the application form. You could email NYMT as they reply very promptly to queries...Winter8799 wrote:does anybody know anything about actor musician roles? Thankyou! They're going to think I'm aiming for a record number of emails! Maybe we will bump into each other there
