Post by Sessex »

Hi there , my DD has been told by her school drama Teacher that before thinking of applying to drama school she should apply to 4th Monkey for a years theatre rep training. I have never heard of them and was wondering if any else was aware of them ? think they are a faily new Theatre Workshop group ?
many thanks

Not sure I can offer any advice here. As far as I am aware 4th monkey theatre group are a company that offer performing and training alongside each other on either a 2 year course or a 1 year course. I am under the impression that they take from 18 years upwards. DD knows of 1 person who did a workshop with them and found it a valuable experience and another who is currently there but I am not sure in what capacity (student or staff). The first one did a workshop whilst on a musical theatre course, level 6 diploma. The other had already graduated with a diploma in musical theatre.

I have heard of them, though I don't have any direct experience of them.

I can understand a teacher suggesting exploring all avenues but I don't necessarily see why someone "should" apply to something like this before applying to drama school. I would be more inclined to suggest auditioning for drama school first and seeing how she gets on (if drama school is her goal). It depends on finances too. You wouldn't get any funding/loans to cover fees for this and if she is thinking of going on to drama school afterwards then paying for this first could be quite a drain on finances. If London based and living at home then perhaps it would be possible to earn in the first term (which is part time) to offset the costs.

Although they state that they have innovative funding ideas these seem to consist principally of sponsored events - which of course means persuading people you know to part with money!

It does look really interesting. Well worth investigating and it looks as if it could provide exciting and useful experience - but I don't see it as an essential preparation for drama school. Schools are geared up to spot potential and plenty of people get in without any special training.

http://www.fourthmonkey.co.uk This theatre rep company led by Steven Green is brave and genius in its approach. My daughter is on the one year course currently and loving it. Can't wait to see the fruits of their labour in the London and Edinburgh season. :D :D
