D s has decided that he wants to change his legit song for auditions . He is a tenor and needs a good ballad . Any ideas please ?? He has thought about the usual Maria, younger than springtime , street where you live etc. nothing seems to be right . Any ideas gratefully received .

It might be worth investing in this:

The Singers Musical Theatre Anthology

They come in several volumes - and are split into books for different voices (Tenor, Soprano, Mezzo etc etc)
You can get them with accompaniment CDs too (more expensive then obviously).

There's even a 16 bar adbridged audition volume...

They're published by Hal - Leonard and they are available from most music shops and from on-line stores like Music Room, Ebay, Amazon. There are probably some second-hand offers around too. I think there are 4 volumes for Tenor. If you searched on Amazon you would probably be able to "look inside" and get some ideas without buying them if you wanted to!

As a tenor the choice available to him is huge!

Thank you for the suggestions , keep them coming . There are lots of songs out there , but this era often has songs with a very small range and often very easy, hence the reason he is changing his choice. The ones that are difficult enough would probably be the ones that are over used . That is a worry in itself .

Would anything from Gilbert and Sullivan fit the brief? Or does it have to be 20th Century? I know these are operetta - but there are some wonderful tenor songs and arias, and they would certainly show off range!

I love Hilarion's song : Whom thou hast chained must wear his chain - from Princess Ida - so lyrical
(there's a top Bflat in it I think...)
though there are many more which have more humour but are still ballads.
If G&S would fit the bill I will ask dd for some suggestions as she knows the operas much better than I do.
