MT degree course applications for 2015, open days and

Post by soda »

I know this is early, but dd is in yr 12 and considering (won't consider anything else) applications for next year for BA Musical Theatre.
Trouble is she has a twin brother who wants to do something else entirely, he is having no trouble booking open days. We have booked an open day at GSA. Where else can we look that has applications via UCAS.
Have thought of, Chichester (any one have any feedback on this course) and Central. We know the others she is interested in will have to be applied to directly.
Is there a definitive list anywhere of MT degree/diploma courses and which require application via UCAS or direct. I know her school won't have done this before so we need to be clued up.
Many thanks to all of you who have been here before and will help.

Hi soda - great idea to make an early start. My dd is only 16 and going to Laine in Sept - they don't offer degree. Urdang have a good website which is regularly updated but open days get booked up very quickly. There doesn't seem to be any standard format for these colleges as to whether you apply directly or through UCAS or both! You may also consider Artsed and Mountview for MT - there will be many people more qualified than me on here to help you with degree courses - good luck to you and your dd :D

Think Central is via UCAS. Lots offer degree courses but not through UCAS. Is there a reason you only want the ones via UCAS?

Thanks everyone. Caroline, she will, of course, be looking at "direct application" courses too, but none of them seem to offer open days. I was just checking that we haven't missed any obvious ones.

Have you been on the actual UCAS website and done a search for MT courses? That might give you a few to look into. Also on this forum, I think there was a thread whose title I cannot remember - something about definitive ages for starting colleges - where a forum member gathered a list of colleges and their qualifications/funding options - probably on page 2 of 'Training'. That might be worth a look also.

We were looking at this too and they all seemed to say that they see all they need at the audition day, so many don;t offer open days ( also they get paid for the auditions, so I suppose it's better for them ;) )

Hi, I'd recommend going to see their end of year shows if you can, that'll give you a feel for the style of the school in case they don't do open days. Most of them are happening pretty soon though. Urdang's is 19th and 21st June.

Hi,
Is your dd looking for Dance MT courses or Acting MT courses? Dd1 applied via CUKAS for Scotland Conservatoire and UCAS for Blackpool, GSA, Chichester (but didn't audition in the end) and LIPA. She is doing a 2 year course in Acting/Musical Theatre level 4 Diploma starting in September in Bristol after successfully auditioning. She can do an HND and top up to a degree if she wishes, plus she can live at home and save on tuition fees/accommodation costs.
Pm me if you want to know more about the auditions.
Dd2 auditioned for Ballet courses. She was unsuccessful (still waiting for a date for Scotland Conservatoire for an audition date). She has a place at a local, full time private dance college and will try again for ballet plus MT dance courses ie Bird, Urdang possibly Laines but don't think we can afford Laines (no degree course).
Hope that helps :)

HI Soda,

Yes Central is UCAS, also GSA and Arts Ed. I think Urdang is both UCAS and their own form as I remember ! Mountview just direct to them. I would always check on the individual websites tho - cos it does change sometimes!

They do a lot of showing around at the audition day usually to save having to make repeated trips- I think the only "open day" we attended was GSA. Loads of info on this site and lots of very helpful people. Good luck !

Hi Tess, I see that Arts Ed is now UCAS - does that mean that the fees are the same as normal UCAS universities then? When my ds got into Arts Ed 3 years ago, it was not UCAS although connected to City University so that they could offer the BA.
