Grants/Burseries

Would anyone know where I could apply for additional grants/burseries, I have trawled the turn2us.org site and done a google seach, my daughter has been offered a place at a Performing Arts college, we are on a low income and the college do not participate in the DADA awards. We have so far been offered 49% of funding for the fees and are going to apply for a career development loan, this will just cover the fees for the 3 years. We need help with living expenses of around £7,000 per year, DD will work and we will help where we can but we really need some extra funding to secure the place for the 3 years. All the charities I have applied to so far have turned us down, mainly due to over whelming applications from people.

We were advised to look locally for charitable organisations and trusts as they tend to get a lot less applicants and often do not appear on the national databases like the one you used. If you are lucky you can use the internet and search outwards from local council (some council websites list them - ours didn't) but otherwise look in your local library. Also check with the college who have offered her the place - some hold lists of organisations that have offered help to their students in the past - they tend not to issue them unless specifically asked though . Other student I know have used the site GoFundMe and basically asked everyone they know for help. Congratulations to your DD and good luck with getting the remaining funds she needs

Thank you 2dancersmum, I have been to the library but like you said I am finding when asking out of the area, I am being told that we are not eligible to apply. I will contact the college again and ask them. I have also been to my MP and I am waiting for a response from the house of commons library. I am also finding that the local charities that I am asking for help from are getting an over whelming response for help so we are also being turned down. I will have a look at the other website you have mentioned.

It's not easy at all. Local businesses literally nothing to gain by sponsoring so that is a dead end. We are going to try go fund me. Some of the charities we contacted said the schools have to nominate them. It's so difficult . Good luck xx

Dd has a bursary at a vocational school & we have had a letter saying we have to provide proof that we've applied to trusts & sponsorship.

I know it's almost impossible & we arnt eligible for the few there are so it seems like a complete waste of stamps.

There are a good number on Turntous whichyou can apply for online & if you save your search & cross reference with the emails (using yourself as a bcc) then you can pretty much give them a (self populating) list.

A good CV, youtube clip with a focussed letter/email you can prove you have appliedeasily enough & in 90% of casesyou get no reply.

Are you sure your living expenses will add up to £7000 a year? My Son is at Uni in Guildford and his accommodation and living expenses are nowhere near that!
Maybe recalculate it and see if you can reduce it by a few thousand!

My dd is at Laines and her living expenses are far in excess of £7000, nearer £10,000! Going to be more next year

Do performing arts courses have hidden expenses like costumes that i am unaware of? My dd wants to do performing arts, so now I am concerned!

It's London .... Prices are ridiculous .

Like oscar said, it's London... DD is at Urdang, her living costs for rent, bills and travel are £7500, food, phone, gym and other spending money is on top of that and adds up to well over £10,000.

Uniform was about £450 I think. She managed to get a grant from a small local trust to cover most of the uniform costs.

Lots of courses will have hidden costs, not just Performing Arts. Eldest dd did Illustration and the uni charged £200 'studio fee' plus she had to spend a lot on art materials and printing... DD2 did Law and spent a small fortune on textbooks.

My son has been at Uni in Bristol and he has survived on around £7000 a year so this is what I based my daughter's living costs on, her rent is £4200 per year and then there are bills on top and food etc, so I think £7000 is a very conservative figure. Please give any tips of how your son has survived on less as it will be a real struggle for us.

There are lots of hidden costs that are not mentioned like photos for the agency, exam fees etc. My daughter also has a place at Uni to do Musical Theatre but we would have had to subsidise her by at least £4000.00 per year as her rent was over £6000, she really wants to go to performing arts college so we thought we may as well help her to go to a place where she wants to be at, she wasn't really keen on going to Uni and there is little difference in the cost.

Absolutely , any top tips welcome . Ds just found a shared house in London for 130ish which apparently is reasonable. Seems a fortune and unfurnished too. Gulp !! He will be looking for a job to help out and will be working a lot over the summer to build up some savings . It is really worrying to be honest but it has to be done. I wish he was near Chester house that seems like a much more economic option.

My daughter will have to work when she goes in September and she is hoping to save and work in the Summer, I have told her all she will be doing is classes, work and sleeping there will be no money or time for much else. She has found a shared house and has opted for the box room at £350 per month plus bills, this is two miles from her college and seems in an okay area, I have rung up letting agencies and this house seems to be a good price it is furnished and has all the white goods.
